A road climb on one of the quietest roads in Oregon, through scenic ranches and wide open spaces. Climb at the beginning and be rewarded with a fabulous descent at the end.

Enjoy one of the lonliest roads in Oregon on this solitary road ride. You'll climb quickly out of the Deschutes River Canyon, level out, then gradually increase in elevation until reaching Highway 97.  The beauty of this ride is you'll descend all the way back, no matter where you make your turn-around point.  Sprawling ranches, a lavendar farm, homestead cabins and wildlife make Bakeoven Road one of the best kept road-ride secrets in Central Oregon.  Wind can be a factor and this ride is best March through November, as winter months often have freezing fog.

# Route

* Park at @poi[Imperial River Co](1867262) and be sure to fill up on water.
* Turn left on Bakeoven Road, climb out of the Deschutes River Canyon for 3.7 miles. 
* Ride straight through a @point[working cattle ranch](d,6640.89), then note the @photo[homestead cabin](1526097) on the left.
* Another few rolling hills and there's a @point[Pioneer Cemetary](d,13856.28) on the right.  
* @point[Ashley Lavendar](d,18213.68) is beautiful when in bloom in July & August.
* @poi[Bakeoven Barn](1910718)is a great photo op on the left.  (This is the site where the town of Bakeoven used to be, early 1900s.)
* Climb the next 5 miles, finish with some rollers, and finally reach @point[Bakeoven Summit](d,37013.68), elevation 3516, mile 23.
* Some riders like to reward themselves with ice cream at Goldie's Ice Cream Parlor in @poi[Shaniko](1910716).  Continue to Hwy 97, turn left, ride 2 miles on to Shaniko.  (Hwy 97 has very little shoulder, so it is recommended to ride fast and limit the time on the Hwy.)

# Notes

* Bakeoven Road is a fairly intense climb, but very do-able as the climbing is interspersed with rolling hills for reprieve.  
* Turn around wherever you like for your return to Maupin; it's downhill all the way!
* Pack water, food.  No services are available on route unless you continue on to Shaniko.
* Watch for deer, antelope, elk, rattlesnakes, badgers and rabbits.  They are easily spotted all along the route.
* Freezing fog can occur in winter months, and wind is often strong.  Check local weather at [NOAA](http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=45.08650892100047&lon=-120.83976699799967#.VyKA8PkrLIU).   Maupin is always milder than Bakeoven conditions, so checking the forecast is recommended.
