Greens Farms - Southport Ride

Route Details

A stunning road-ride from the Greens Farms section of Westport to the small coastal hamlet of Fairfield called Southport. A perfect choice if you are staying at The Westport Inn or you're a beach lover! You'll ride to 3 beaches, a couple of land preserves, and an option to stop at a local watering hole on this route. In addition, there are stunning views of the Southport Marina and The Country Club of Fairfield.  You'll have to be in decent shape, though as there are a few steep hills on the way back. Reminder: there's no shame in walking a cruiser up a hill.  You can begin this route at The Westport Inn, Greens Farm Elementary School (on weekends or summer days), Greens Farms Train Station or the Greens Farms Park and Ride. If you ride from start to finish, it might take you 2 hours but this is a great route for relaxing: take a dip in the sea, explore Harbor Rd, go birding in the CT Audubon Christmas Tree Farm, and grab a bite to eat or drink in historic downtown Southport. This is a beautiful late afternoon route in the summer or anytime in the fall.

Starting at [Green Farms School](http://gfs.westport.k12.ct.us/general/directions), turn left onto Morningside Dr South and stay to the left at the fork in the road to continue on the road. After you cross over Hillandale Rd, start looking for a small gate on your left with an [Aspetuck Land Trust](http://www.aspetucklandtrust.org/17120) sign marked @poi[Hilla von Rebay Arboretum](1794312).Park your bike @photo[at the gate](1757957) and take a stroll on the property of the [co-founder and first director of the Guggenheim Museum](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hilla_von_Rebay). There's a small loop that begins off to left around 11 0'clock.

Hop back on your bike and head down Morningside Dr South. Turn left onto Elmstead Lane and then right onto Turkey Hill Rd South and left onto Greens Farms Rd. This is a little cut through to bypass the busy Green Farms Rd. If you miss Elmstead Lane, just turn left onto Green Farms Rd. Very quickly make a right onto New Creek Rd. We'll go under the overpass to I95 and pass the Greens Farms train station. There is a VERY DANGEROUS intersection/merge at the stop sign. **Please know this is a blind curve.** So very carefully cross over onto Beachside Ave and immediately turn right onto Burying Hill Rd. We're headed to our @photo[first beach](1757944), @poi[Burying Hill](1794313)!

Burying Hill Beach is a Westport beach. It has a coastal salt marsh on the right, a rocky outcropping straight ahead, a sandy beach to the left, and a gorgeous view. Don't worry, you will not need any beach stickers when you are riding a bike.

When you are ready, head back out to the road and turn right onto Beachside Ave. You will pass breathtaking views of the Long Island Sound and magnificent waterfront homes. This road has been dubbed, "The Gold Coast of Westport."

When you reach Sasco Creek Rd and Sasco Creek, bear to your right. The Road will become Pequot Ave. Be sure to take the time to look for @photo[shore birds in the creek](1757945). We've reached the second beach, @poi[Southport Beach](1794314). Southport Beach is located in Fairfield, CT.

Continue riding on Pequot Ave until you reach Center St. Make a right. You  are headed right for the harbor. Make a left onto Harbor Rd to continue with this route, or make a right to explore the harbor area on your own.
When you're ready, take Harbor Rd UP (and it is a little hill) to the stop sign. Make a right to follow Harbor Rd. You will pass the [Tide Mill](http://virtualglobetrotting.com/map/tide-mill-building/) building on @photo[your right](1757962).

Head up the small (but steep) hill and make a right onto Sasco Hill Rd. Take this road all the way to the end. Be sure to notice the @photo[gorgeous views](1757958) of the golf course on your right. Make a right and head to the @poi[last beach on the route](1794315), [Sasco Beach](http://www.fairfieldct.org/content/2765/2783/3424.aspx). This is our turn-around point. But first be sure to @photo[get off your bike](1757946) and stick your feet in the salt water. Sasco Beach is also located in Fairfield, CT.

It's time to climb back on the bike and head UP the biggest hill on the route. It might be a good idea to walk the bike up the hill. At the top of the hill, turn left onto Sasco Hill Rd. You are headed back the same way that you got here. So, turn left at the stop sign onto Harbor Rd. Turn left again to stay on Harbor Rd. You'll climb or walk one last hill, then it's downhill from here. You are going to into town.

Turn right onto Rose Hill Rd. You'll come to a busy intersection. **Use caution here.** If you go straight through the intersection, the road will change to Old Post Rd. There is a @poi[new 10-acre park](2157827) on the right called [Southport Park](http://www.aspetucklandtrust.org/18936). If you turn left, you will arrive in the small village of Southport. Great deli on the corner. There's a local tavern with discounts for riders called [The Horseshoe Cafe](https://www.restaurant.com/horseshoe-cafe-southport-pid=37881?prti=1647&pid=7645235)on the left. Simply show this offer on your phone.

When you're ready, continue riding on Pequot Ave, back towards Southport Beach. Right after you reach the beach, turn right on to Sasco Creek Rd. You'll go over I95. Then you'll see the [CT Audubon H. Smith Richarson Wildlife Preserve and Christmas Tree Farm](http://www.ctaudubon.org/sanctuaries/smith-richardson/#sthash.vl6chJgf.dpbs). @poi[This is a great place for birding](1794643). This is a @photo[nice cool spot](1757950) to relax.

At the end of Sasco Creek Rd, turn left onto Greens Farms Rd. If you started at the train station, you'll need to make a left onto New Creek Rd. **Please check for cars before turning.** If you started at the elementary school, turn right onto Turkey Hill Rd, quick left onto Elmstead Ln., then right onto Morningside Dr. Take this road until you reach the school on your right. If you'd like to make a pitstop before ending your ride, check out [The Little Barn](http://littlebarnct.com/). Before reaching the school, make a left on Hillandale Rd. You'll have a small hill to climb. Pass  a cemetary on the right, then a right on Church St S. The @photo[pub](1778722) will be on the left at the end of the road. If you have to wait for a table, play a game of corn hole outside. Enjoy!
