Starting in Hillsborough, this route will take you out of town heading into northern Orange County to Cedar Grove and then goes southwest into Mebane. On your way back you dip south and re-enter Hillsborough from the west. The northern part of the ride has more gentle rolling hills, while the southern part has a few climbs that will get your heart pumping. Once outside of the towns, you will be on country roads passing thru farms and woodlands.

Route Details

This ride is a big loop thru the middle of Orange County.  It starts in Hillsborough at Gold Park and has a destination rest stop in Mebane. This ride is suitable for all skill levels at any time of the year that can do the distance. Gold Park has plenty of parking and has facilities.

# Route

* As you leave the park turn to the right and go thru the underpass, continue right and then @photo[left](1760963) @slice[up the hill](d,48.4,765.38).  Take your time, this is a long slog when you are not warmed up.  Be careful at the @photo[stop light](1760950) about @point[half way up the hill](d,493.34).  Cars tend to make left turns in front of you onto W King Street.
* When you get to the crossing of Rt. 70, you will be leaving the residential part of Hillsborough and starting into the country.  Take care @photo[crossing 70](1760962) as the light is quick as are the cars.
* Once past 70, things open up and you can enjoy the rolling hills.  @photo[This](1761171) is where the @slice[your real warm up](d,2114.24,4469.49) begins as you get into your pace. 
* After the fast downhill, you can enjoy the mix of farms and county homesteads.  You will be on @photo[nice roads](1760953) with rolling hills.   
* When you on @point[Mill Creek and pass Governor Scott Road](d,19845.87), be on the lookout for interesting yard decorations.  The @photo[air mail box](1760961) is a classic. 
* Your rest stop is in @photo[Mebane](1760956) where there are several nice coffee shops that are very welcoming to cyclists.
* Take care as you leave Mebane. You have to @slice[cross 70 and a set of rail road tracks ](d,30929.45,31071.07)before your left turn on to E Washington Street.
* From here back you will once again be on county roads.  As you @slice[go south](d,36486.9,42276.96) your generally enjoying a lot of downhill, but as you come @slice[back north](d,42276.96,49684) you have the climb back up. The last section of Mt. Willing is your @slice[last notable climb.](d,53161.58,53958.39)
* You will know you are on the home stretch when you @slice[cross under I85](d,54569.13,55096.93).  There is a nice shoulder and normally very little traffic. 
* Once you are over the hump on Ben Johnson Rd, you are on the @slice[home stretch](d,55414.23,59405.78).  It always seems like the horses are heading back to the barn as the pace always seems to pick up as it is mostly down hill. 
* Be careful turning in the @photo[Gold Park](1760951) as you come down the last hill.
