Bike Touring Around Toronto

In 2017 I have decided to ditch public transit in favour of biking to work. It was as easy as buying a bike, a helmet and commit to myself that I would bike to work no matter what. Very soon, whenever people were surprised at work that I biked every day, with sun, rain, snow, storms, ice, etc., the only thing I could tell them is that I was probably one of the few who enjoyed commuting every single day.

While it might sound an overkill to plan routes for a 10km commuting distance, I started playing with Ride with GPS and creating routes. At first my goal was to go from point A to B and come back. Then, with time, I started realizing two things. First was that not always the shortest route was the best. Avoiding aggressive drivers and making my commute more enjoyable started to become my priority. Second was that going out after work, during weekends and exploring the city and the network of parks, ravines and trails was an unexpected bonus.

Other bonus, this one a bit more predictable were the benefits for both my physical and mental health. Some days, the time I was biking back home was almost like a cure for the stress of the day, and the corporate nonsense. I also could use my time on the bike to sort the problems out.

I also learned what works better in Toronto in terms of routes during the summer and winter. I never stop cycling due to weather.

With Covid-19, two things happened, I stopped commuting (WFH), left that job, and started exploring the city in a whole new way with only fun and enjoyment as a goal.

Other hobby I have is to take pictures wherever I go with my bike, and I log my bike-travelling tracks as well.

I want to use this space to share my experiences and routes.
