Bike Bunch
Scheduled wwekly rides in the Portland area, April through October
The Bike Bunch, established in 1973, has scheduled rides every week, April through October. The season's schedule is distributed online through Ride with GPS, which also contains route sheets for all scheduled rides. The cost for membership is $20 per year. Bring: water, lunch, snacks, helmet, spare inner tube, repair tools and pump on all rides.

We are a very social group and enjoy chatting during the ride and at lunch. Many members are couples, but we also have a lot of singles, 50/50 split between men and women. Each ride during our season, the Bike Bunch has as many as 3 starting locations, usually with a couple of route options from each location. Generally we'll have a starting location on the east side of Portland or in Vancouver and another starting location to the south and/or west of Portland. We ride to a designated park for a brown-bag lunch, then return to the start. Distances and ride difficulties (*hills*) vary, but the rides are typically 20-50 miles long. If you just show up at a ride as a newbie, we pair you with a ride buddy. We don't leave anybody behind meaning we stop to fix flats, take bathrooms breaks and re-group.

Easy Riders - 8-10 average mph; stay together; 20-30A,B mile rides
Leisure Riders - 10-13 average mph; regroup often; 30-40C mile rides
Long Riders - 13-15 average mph; regroup occasionally; 40+C,D mile rides

We utilize a guideline to rate each route an A, B, C, D or E. The data is based on the metrics provided by RWGPS and will not match any devices you own. The number proceeding the rating is the total route mileage. The letter is determined by the average vertical gain (hills) and maximum grade. For example: A 35B route will be 35 miles long with approximately an average elevation gain of 21-30' and a maximum grade of 3.6-4.5%

A = basically flat, 20' or less per mile and 3.5% or less grade.
B = gentle, rolling terrain, 21'-30' per mile and 3.6%-4.5% grade.
C = moderate, shorter hills, 31'-50' per mile and 4.6% - 6.0% grade.
D = difficult, long, steep hills, 51'-85' per mile and 6.1%-10.5% grade.
E = extremely, difficult, sustained climbing, 86' or more per mile and 10.6% or more grade.

We normally start riding promptly at 10 AM, or at 9 AM when the weather forecast high is 80 degrees or more. If the forecast is rain, we have fewer riders show up. Most of us are retired, or at least working only part time. Typical ages are mid-fifties to mid-seventies, but we have others both younger and older.
