Route Details

The Red Apple loop is part of the marvelous Mount Emily Recreation Area located a mere three miles from La Grande, Oregon’s bustling downtown. The main trailhead for non-motorized adventures is located 2.8 miles north of Blackhawk Trail Lane on Owsley Canyon Road and is well marked from the downtown area.

Red Apple, otherwise known as the 700 trail, is a moderate to easy, highly trafficked trail treasured by walkers, runners, equestrians and cyclists. Exit the parking area to the southwest. Descend south about a half a mile before turning to the east and winding north around the MERA unit through a series of open meadows with a nice view into La Grande. Enjoy the birds and foliage as the next mile ebbs and flows through the forested landscape gaining and losing very little elevation. The sequential half mile has more uphill than down culminating in a brief 9.3% grade where a bit of puffing may be required. Having regained the elevation lost in the first burst of speed from the parking lot, turn south away from MERA Loop, crossing a meadows frequently full of Camas and a wooden bridge. Follow the signs back to the Owsley Canyon trailhead.

Being mindful of the trails is always encouraged. Please do not ride if more dirt leaves on tires, hooves or shoes then is left behind. Also, make sure you are not damaging the soft trails by walking on the edge or damaging the soft berms. When you are done with your ride be sure to visit Mountain Works Bicycles and tell them how great the ride was then go to Side A and test out the local brew.
