This remote and difficult route takes you up the least climbed HC climb in Colorado. Food and water are available at Mishawaka and Verns. The climbing is gratuitously difficult and the descending is technical so your endurance, skill and group's friendship will all be tested on this savage route.

Route Details

This epic climbing route features beautiful low traffic roads and Colorado's least climbed HC climb. The Stove Prairie - Rist climb is rarely climbed because CO 14 is not safe to ride up from Fort Collins; the other two options feature difficult climbs before you get to this monster.

This route goes up one of those (Buckhorn Canyon) and down the other (Rist Canyon). The Stove Prairie - Rist HC climb is harder than its 6.3 mile, 2020 feet, 7.5 % average grade and 8000 foot top elevation suggest. The rollers along horsetooth are beautiful but gratuitously difficult after two major climbs.

Route

Park in the south lot of Mehaffey Park and proceed west on 22nd street, then West on US 34. After 2.3 miles with bike lanes you will turn onto Wild Lane and will remain on low traffic roads for the next 72 miles.

Ride north through a beautiful valley to Masonville then turn left to remain on Buckhorn Road. The road from Masonville to Stove Prairie School features a remote canyon and a difficult climb. The descent into Poudre Canyon is thrilling and technical (brake use is mandatory to stay on road) and is safer now that the cattle guards have been removed. Turn right on CO 14 and descend 2.5 miles to the Mishawaka Inn where you can eat and rest before returning back up the canyon.

The HC climb back up Stove Prairie and then left up Rist back side features 620 feet of climbing in the last 1.1 miles. It is savage and I have seen pro riders crack and paperboy here. The HC descent down the front side of Rist Canyon requires hard breaking through the first mile of switchbacks then opens up into a thrilling but still technical descent.

Continue through Bellvue to the end of Rist Canyon road and refill bottles and/or bellies at Vern's restaurant. Backtrack for half a mile to Bellvue and turn left to head south to the rolling hills along the hogbacks east of Horsetooth Reservoir. Turn right at both opportunities to take 38E along the south side of Horsetooth and over Horsetooth mountain pass back towards Masonville.

Finally return south towards US 34 on Glade road in the valley just east of the valley you climbed an eternity ago.

Important Reminders

  • You can get water at the start, Mishawaka, Verns and Horsetooth Mountain park.

  • There are numerous opportunities to wimp out on this ride at Stove Prairie school (back down Buckhorn Canyon), at Mishawaka (down Poudre canyon) at the top of Rist (back down Buckhorn Canyon) and at Verns (flat roads to Mehaffey).

  • There is no cell service between mile 5 and 41 (over 5000 feet of climbing in 36 miles) so clear communication while regrouping at Stove Prairie school, Mishawaka, Top of Rist and Verns is essential for groups to avoid needless worry.

  • This route is not recommended in winter or within a week after spring snow storms due to snow hiding in well shaded spots of the Rist descent.
  • CO 14 is safe to descend from Mishawaka to Verns. Overland trail and Taft Hill/Wilson are safe flat roads back to Mehaffey Park.

If you like this route you are addicted to climbing. If you complete it, you are well down that path; please seek counseling. Know your limits and the easier options to return to the start.
