Route Details

This ride along the Oregon Coast was packed with visually captivating scenes around every corner. In one afternoon ride from whale watching on a cliff edge to lighthouse exploring to discovering quiet surf breaks. Closed the day with a beer and dinner in the quaint town of Newport.

To start this adventure, head over to @poi[Bike Newport](5374409). The friendly staff are local experts on fat biking the beach and will give you all the intel you need. Before embarking on this journey, it’s important to know which way the wind is blowing. It’s always best to have the wind at your back while riding on the beach, and then ride the road back into the headwind where you’re more protected. Another option is to leave a vehicle at the end of your ride so you don’t have to pedal back on the road. 
 
Assuming the wind is cooperative, you'll start this route at the northernmost point of @slice[Otter Rock](d,0,156.13) and head back to Newport. Park at @slice[Devils Punchbowl State Natural Area](d,0,156.13) and headed down the wooden stairs to the beach, where you will discover that Otter Rock is a beautiful backdrop to a gem of a surf break. Headed south along the sandy bluffs, you'll cross a few small streams, find lots of uncombed beach life, and see the Yaquina Head Lighthouse in the distance. It is important to do this ride during the lowest tide possible because you'll work your way past different rock outcrops and it's easier to ride around them when the tide is out. But keep our eyes on the lighthouse—as you get closer, the water around Yaquina Head becomes much too deep to ride through, and if you stay on the beach you will run into the cliffs. So plan on @slice[getting off the beach](d,5433.01,5679.45) to ride Hwy 101 for a bit. The best spot to pull out is at Moolack Shores Motel.

On Hwy 101, climb up and follow signs to the right to @slice[enter Yaquina Head Lighthouse](d,8290.43,10331.96). This is a great place to take a break from the bike and enjoy the beautiful views. You can explore the lighthouse and the various viewpoints, and if you’re lucky, you may even see whales passing by (generally in the winter and spring months).

When you are ready, jump back on the bikes and head back out toward Hwy 101. Immediately before your hit the highway, @slice[take a right on Agate Way Road](d,11923.41,12246.03). This will dead-end at a path leading to a staircase that brought us back down to the beach. Continue your ride south, exploring the beach, all the way back to Newport. For an added bonus, you can make your way to the jetty, climb the rocks, and capture the views of the inlet and Newport Bridge.
