From the Northern Highlands of the Big Hole Mountains to the rolling agricultural roads, the beauty of this landscape backdropped by the infamous Tetons will leave one in awe, challenging and inspiring those to venture into this 88-mile mixed terrain loop.

Route Details

The North Valley AgriRamble is a mixed-terrain, mostly unpaved route encompassing a gravel rail trail, rugged forest roads and decommissioned roadbeds through the Big Hole Mountains, gravel and doubletrack roads meandering through agricultural land, and quiet, paved, county roads.

While the loop can be ridden in either direction and started from several spots along the route, beginning in Lamont along the Ashton-Tetonia Trail and riding clockwise is recommended for a number of reasons:
1) Breaks up a 43-mile stretch of unreliable water access between @point[Teton](d,96293.3) and @point[Tetonia](d,24115.57).
2) Allows for @slice[longer descents](d,47761.99,58730.71) and @slice[more gradual climbs](d,106059.8,141947.69)
2) Avoids a typical late-afternoon northbound wind.
3) Opportunity for mid-ride brunch or last minute supplies in Tetonia.
4) Easily accessible by car from Highway 32.
6) Saves the best road for last – @photo[Hog Hollow Road](12874167)

The loop can be ridden from late May to late October. Expect snow and/or mud in May and October.

# Route Overview
Beginning along the abandoned Yellowstone Rail Line, the route starts down the @photo[Ashton-Tetonia Trail](13305842), over the @photo[Bitch Creek trestle bridge](12874155) passing through the rolling northern fields of Teton Valley into the small town, Tetonia. This is a great opportunity to fuel up at @poi[Badger Creek Cafe](73724642) or grab some last minute items from the general store down the street. Heading west towards the Teton River, the route leaves the valley and climbs into the northern portion of the Big Hole Mountains on rugged forest roads and @photo[decommissioned roadbeds](12874168).

The Big Hole Mountains sit within a small section of Caribou-Targhee National Forest, the @slice[only public land along the route](d,40819.43,52006.31). This is the only truly mountainous section of the route and the roads indicate that. One can expect a steep, slow climb up the rocky, rooty and dirt forest roads. Around @point[mile 26.7](d,42957.55), there is a new [singletrack trail](https://ridewithgps.com/routes/40717854) leading to @poi[Packsaddle Lake](73724644). This is the @photo[largest and most prestine lake](13305850) in the Big Hole Mountains. If you’re lucky you’ll have it to yourself, but expect hikers and ATVs. There is some limited camping options here. Expect bugs in the spring and summer.

After the Packsaddle Lake turn-off, the grade lessens, but continues to climb until a @point[4-way road junction](d,46712.63). The route heads northeast along two-track and then veers left past an old cattleguard onto a @poi[decommissioned road bed](73724635). This turn may come expectedly, so pay close attention.

Use caution as you descend and prepare for unpredictable rocks, dips, tree branches along with anything else this forgotten road throws at you. Leaving the northwest end of the Big Holes, @poi[Pony Creek road](73724636) offers a @slice[much-welcomed descent into Green Canyon](d,48043.05,58684.88). Watch your speed and enjoy.

A gentle climb up a paved road along the gorge of Calamity Creek below takes you to Green Canyon Hot Springs. @poi[Green Canyon Hot Springs](73724640) offers amenities including hot prepared foods, packaged snacks, restrooms and showers, developed tent camping, covered picnic tables, and an indoor hotspring facility. where there are services such as hot spring soaking. Hours will vary by the season and it is often closed Sundays.

Leaving Green Canyon, a gravel road switchbacks up the canyon wall to the west. The road crosses into @photo[rolling agricultural land](12874160), not unlike what the route started out in, but at a higher elevation and with grandeur views of the whole @photo[Teton Range](13305849) to the east.

These ag roads vary from loose, @photo[fine gravel with large rocks scattered](13305845) throughout to hardpack dirt, as well as being subject to wind and water erosion and mud, making the next 7.5 miles feel a bit monotonous and slow. Don’t forget to look behind you to take in the incredible views of the @photo[Teton Range](13305849) and remember that another @slice[amazing descent](d,74375.44,96188.19) awaits you.

In Teton, stop at @poi[Tacos Gonzales](73724632), where there are covered picnic tables and @photo[delicious food](13305872) to fuel the final stretch of the ride. There is also a @poi[general store](73724643) in town for limited supplies and food.

Following the @slice[mostly-paved roads out of Teton](d,96529.16,107335.56), you’ll cross the Teton River, which is the @poi[last reliable water to filter](73724641) before the end. As the pavement ends, the route heads straight through a @poi[short section of doubletrack](73724645) before popping out onto @poi[Hog Hollow Road](73724634).

The quiet, unpaved @slice[Hog Hollow Road](d,116739.23,135987.46) winds between agricultural land, featuring @photo[interesting rock outcroppings](13305843), and follows the north rim of the Teton River. In the final miles, the road bends and winds around with the Teton Range popping in and out of view for a few last scenic moments to capture.

@slice[At the highway](d,136052.59,137424.44), use caution when merging and crossing as both points are near hills and turns in the road. Merge off the highway at the @photo[iconic Grain Elevator](12874159) with a pullout, where you can access the rail trail and return to your vehicle at the start.

## Food/Water
This route passes through two small towns with limited food options. Don't expect many services to be available on Sundays. Always call ahead if you intend to use any services on route.

* The @poi[Grand View General Store](77371177) in Tetonia offers typical packaged foods found at a convenience store.
* @poi[Green Canyon Hot Springs](73724640) has packaged snacks and prepared hot foods.
* @poi[Tacos Gonzales](73724632) in Teton has delicious & fresh authentic Mexican food.
* @poi[Junction Service](73724643) store offers packaged food options.
* **Water must be filtered/treated** from lakes, creeks, rivers and streams.
* Potable water is available from a @poi[spigot outside the post office](73724633) in Teton, at convenience stores in @poi[Tetonia](77371177) and @poi[Teton](73724643), and at @poi[Green Canyon Hot Springs](73724640).

## Camping
This route presents the challenge of limited camping options in a localized zone. Dispersed, free camping is limited to @slice[a 7-mile stretch through Caribou-Targhee National Forest](d,40940.06,52156.33), in the Big Hole Mountains.
- Dispersed camping at Packsaddle Lake ([one mile off route via a new singletrack trail](https://ridewithgps.com/routes/40717854)) may be the most enjoyable spot.
- Developed tent campsites are available for purchase at Green Canyon Hot Springs.
- **Overnight camping is not allowed along the Ashton-Tetonia Rail Trail**

# Important Reminders
- This route can be ridden from **mid-May through October**, weather depending.
- **Never rely on services to be open**, especially during the shoulder seasons – always carry a means of water treatment/filtration and enough nutrition to finish.
- **A gravel or mountain bike with a 50mm to 2.1“ tire width is ideal** for enjoyable and safe descending. A minimum width of 40mm is recommended for this route.
- **Bear country:** **Carry bear spray.** The Big Hole Mountains and the hills surrounding them are home to Grizzly and Black Bear. Bears are also commonly spotted in Tetonia and its possible to encounter one on the Ashton-Tetonia Trail.
- **Camping:** Camp only on public land or in designated campgrounds. Must be able to properly store food safely, away from bears. 
- **Pack in, Pack out. Leave No Trace**.
- **Private land:** **Do not trespass.** This route passes through a lot of private land. Respect property boundaries, wave to land owners.
- **Tip well at establishments and be friendly.** The towns of Tetonia and Teton don’t see a lot of cyclists – you are representing all of us.
