Route Details

Fast gravel and only 1.2 miles of pavement make the Golden Spike loop a great intermediate gravel ride! It is best to start early in the morning as there will be very few cars and the sun will be less intense. This route has wide open views and some great hills, but little shade. The best time to ride this route is in the spring or fall.

@point[Park](d,46942.15) at the [Golden Spike Historical Park](http://www.nps.gov/gosp/index.htm). This is a fee use park, but a national park pass gets you in for free! Please check the [website](https://www.nps.gov/gosp/planyourvisit/fees.htm) for more details. You are able to start your ride early in the morning before the park opens,@point[enter label](d,46946.05) as the park does not have an entry gate.

Head north from the @point[Golden Spike parking lot](d,46947.45) on the only pavement section of this route. From there begins a bit of a rolling gravel climb to the @point[high point of the route at mile 4](d,6513.71). This climb is rewarded with 7 miles of downhill! @point[Take a left turn and head south](d,18521.87). This section has a few rocky sections but nothing that any gravel bike could not handle. @point[At mile 22.2 ](d,35690.29)you can join the old railroad grade as you gradually climb back to the parking lot. Alternatively you can stay on the gravel road. The road option makes it easy to add additional miles by heading south to the Spiral Jetty ([Longer Route](https://ridewithgps.com/routes/43190013))

This route is best for intermediate gravel riders as you will need to carry all of your food and water. Bring a good repair kit as it is a bit remote. The gravel conditions are pretty good and a 35mm or bigger tire would work well.

* Be aware that there are cows in this area. They seem to be timid and likely to move if they hear you coming.
* Some sections of the road pass through private property. Please be respectful and stay on the road.
