There’s always space when the going gets tough, and in Val d’Orcia, the bike can help separate the wheat from the chaff — or yourself from the crowds. Departing from the Historic Centre of Pienza, this loop weaves through the farms, villages and landscape reflecting Renaissance agricultural prosperity.

The route @slice[skirts around Montepulciano](d,32445.2,34427.6) — detour through the north or south entrances to visit. The total distance may seem modest, but minutes on 15% gradients can pass like hours.

The two gravel sectors en route are well-maintained, but **keep a close eye on newly developing potholes and "washboard" surfaces**. A gravel bike is not a must, but good 25 or 28 mm tires are.
