A little goes a long way in this area. The gravel sectors summon competence and the climbs, too. It’s a pedallers’ paradise where the roads are glorious and the views majestic, yet the terrain can punish the uninitiated. A consistent training regime is highly recommended, if not required.
Significant effort is invested annually for events like Strade Bianche and L’Eroica to fill holes and keep the white roads in tip-top shape. In most cases you can easily carry speed over the sectors but keep a close eye on newly developing potholes and “washboard” surfaces. A gravel bike is not a must, but good, 25 or 28 mm tires are.
Lucca Cycling Club is a virtual atelier for cycling travel founded by former pro cyclist and Canadian National Champion Alison Testroete. From our base in Lucca, we host bike trips worth training for across Italy.
