A very diverse tour through the Geistal (valley of Geis greek) to the Predigerstuhl at the end of the valley.
The tour leads through forests and fields and to honorable old trees as well as the Neuenstein castle with a rose garden.

A very diverse tour through the valley of the Geis creek to the Predigerstuhl ("preacher's seat") at the end of that valley. For this you first follow the waymarked cycling path R10 on ordinary asphalt field ways. Then there is a short section on a small country road before the tour continues on gravel forest trails.
There you will also need some endurance as there are now significant climbs.

The start is already at the Geis creek, which has formed the valley we will follow. So the tour leads along that creek against the curent direction out of the town of Bad Hersfeld. You will follow the R10 signed cycling path without any variations up to the village of Aua. It has to be mentioned that there are a  @point[few signs missing](d,5404.76).
In Aua there's a little detour to reach the more than @point[1000 years old linden tree](d,12438.24). After this the tour continues on the waymarked cycling route again to reach the village of Saasen. On the way to that village there's a short @point[steep climb](d,12815.38) to absolve, but this is honored by a @photo[view to the Neuenstein castle](15804358).

In Saasen @point[we leave the cycling path R10](d,13675.4) and continue @point[on the country road](d,13862.04) for aprox. 1km, after which we leave @point[to the right into a little side valley](d,14590.97).
We now follow the small creek passing the Gelbachs mill and the  @photo[Gelbachseiche](15804359) until we reach the end of the valley and climb to the top of the ridge.
For this we follow the forest trail until it turns left and crosses the creek to join another trail. We follow this other trail @point[upwars to the right](d,17448.7).
Then we @point[turn left at the next intersection](d,17803.32) and again @point[turn right at the following intersection](d,18156.6). The trail is a bit @point[roughly graveled here](d,18188.89) for about 300m.

After this we follow the forest trail straight; it will descend after a while where you will have a wonderful @photo[view above the Geis valley](15804364) (which is possible, because a section of spruce forest died due to very dry summers in the last years). The trail continues descending before it starts a new climb at an intersection @point[turning slightly to the right](d,20387.31).

After this last ascend we arrive at the  @point[top of the hill](d,21026.29), the @photo[Predigerstuhl](15804366): A place where sometimes worships took place and at which some hiking trails intersect. There's also a few tables and benches as well as a small shelter hut.

They way back begins by descending that last climb we just absolved until reaching the next intesection where we  @point[turn sharp left into the Dudenbachtal](d,21630.58).

This small and scenic valley follows a small creek and also passes a  @photo[Quelle](15804367) source directly next to the trail. At some points water crosses the trail directly.
At the end we arrive at the @point[Flachsröste](d,23039.43). Today it is a @photo[small relaxing area](15804369). In former times this was a place where hempf ("Flachs") has been processed and actively dried to get for instance fabrics to be used in clothes.

After passing the Flachsröste @point[we turn left into the field trail just at before the beginning of the asphalt path](d,23070.7) - the trail we take just follows the little creek at the right side of the stream.
The trail leads us through a side valley back into the Geis valley - directly to the point where we left the country road before. We @point[join the country road again](d,25240.93) and @point[turn left](d,25662.4) just before reaching the village Saasen again to ascend up to the Neuenstein castle (of course you can also leave out this little detour to the castle)
**Be careful when turning left** on the country road - if there is unusual much traffic perhaps continue to the village and make a u-turn here at a safe location so that you can leave the country road to the right to climb up to the castle!

Up at the @photo[Neuenstein castle](15804371) there is "Little Red Riding Hood's rosen garden" and of course the castle intself. There's also a nature garden. Unfortunately there's no food or beverage service here on a regular basis (speaking of 2024).

The way back to Bad Hersfeld can be done exactly like the way we got here. For variety there are two little alternatives shown here:
Between the cillages Saasen and Aua after making the short steep descend you can go  @point[straight](d,28243.87) instead of crossing the highway to the left so that you continue parallel to the highway.  @point[At the end turn left two times](d,29404.58) to rejoin @point[the original route](d,29930.08).

As well you can leave out the left turn at Allmershausen village and @point[continue straight](d,36185.82) following the official waymarking of the R10 cycling route so that you will reach Bad Hersfeld by passing a section of the forest instead cycling next to the street. You just have to @point[take a turn to the left after passing the descend leading into the town](d,39142.5), to @point[to rejoin the original route](d,39232.09).

**Food & Beverages:** There is a hotel with a restaurant at the main street in Aua (Hotel Hess, Geistalstraße; @point[near this point](d,12334.81)).
Also there are a bakery and a supermarket in Obergeis (point to the main road @point[here](d,9797.1) or respectively @point[here](d,9538.6).

# DE

Eine sehr abwechslungsreiche Runde durch das Geistal hin zum Predigerstuhl am Ende des Tals. Dabei folgt man zuerst dem Radweg R10 auf gewöhnlichen asphaltierten Feldwegen, dann ist ein kurzes Stück Landstraße zu absolvieren und es geht weiter auf Schotterwegen durch den Wald. Dort geht es dann auch signifikant bergauf, sodass etwas Ausdauer erforderlich ist.

Der Start ist schon an der Geis, die das Tal geformt hat, dem wir folgen wollen. Daher führt die Strecke am Geisbach stromaufwärts aus Bad Hersfeld heraus und folgt zunächst dem ausgeschilderten Radweg R10 ohne Abweichungen bis zum Dorf Aua. Es ist jedoch zu beachten, dass ein @point[paar Schilder fehlen](d,5404.76).
In Aua führt uns ein kleiner Abstecher zur über @point[1000 Jahre alten Linde](d,12438.24). Anschließend geht es weiter auf dem Radweg ins Dorf Saasen. Auf dem Weg dort hin gibt es eine kurze @point[steile Rampe](d,12815.38) zu erklimmen, was dann aber durch einen @photo[Blick auf die Burg Neuenstein](15804358) belohnt wird.

In Saasen @point[verlassen wir den Radweg R10](d,13675.4) und fahren @point[auf der Landstraße](d,13862.04) ca. einen Kilometer weit, um dann nach rechts in ein @point[kleines Seitental einzubiegen](d,14590.97).
Wir folgen nun dem kleinen Bach vorbei an der Gelbachsmühle und der @photo[Gelbachseiche](15804359), bis wir aus dem Tal heraus auf den Bergkamm am Ende des Tals hinauf klettern.
Dafür bleiben wir zunächst auf dem Waldweg und folgen ihm, bis er den Bach in einer Linkskurve überquert und in einen anderen Waldweg einmündet. Diesem Weg folgen wir @point[bergaufwärts nach rechts](d,17448.7).
Dann biegen wir an der @point[nächsten Gelegenheit links](d,17803.32) und einige hundert Meter weiter bei der @point[wiederum nächsten Gelegeheit rechts](d,18156.6) ab. Der Weg ist hier für ca. 300m sehr @point[grob geschottert](d,18188.89).

Dann folgen wir dem Waldweg einfach geradeaus; nach einer Weile auf der Höhe mit wundebarem @photo[Ausblick über das Geistal](15804364) (nachdem wegen der Trockenheit in den letzten Jahren ein Stück Fichtenwald abgestorben ist) geht es bergab, bevor der Weg an einer Kreuzung wieder leicht @point[nach rechts biegend](d,20387.31) anstiegt.

Nach diesem letzten Anstieg erreichen wir auf der @point[Anhöhe](d,21026.29) den @photo[Predigerstuhl](15804366): Ein Ort, an hin und wieder Waldgottesdienste stattfanden und sich einige Wanderwege kreuzen. Es gibt ein paar Bänke und eine kleine Schutzhütte.

Zurück geht es nun zunächst den gerade bewältigten Anstieg wieder hinab bis zur nächsten Kreuzung und dann ganz nach rechts in den Weg @point[ins Dudenbachtal einbiegend](d,21630.58).

Dieses idyllische kleine Tal folgt einem kleinen Bach, es geht auch vorbei an einer @photo[Quelle](15804367). Das Wasser fließt teilweise direkt über den Weg.
Am Ende erreichen wir die @point[Flachsröste](d,23039.43). Heute ist hier ein kleines @photo[Naherholungsgebietchen](15804369) entstanden. Früher wurde hier der Hanf verarbeitet und aktiv getrocknet, um etwa Stoffe für Kleidung zu produzieren.

Vorbei an der Flachsröste biegen wir @point[vor dem Beginn des Anstiegs links in den Feldweg ein](d,23070.7), der (rechts des kleinen Baches) in einem Seitental zurück ins Geistal führt - direkt an den Abzweig, der uns vorher von der Landstraße abzweigend zur Gelbachseiche etc. geführt hatte.
Wir fahren @point[zurück auf die Landstraße](d,25240.93) und biegen vor dem nächsten Ort @point[links ab](d,25662.4), um zur Burg Neuenstein hinauf zu fahren (man kann diesen Abstecher natürlich auch weglassen).
**Vorsicht beim Linksabbiegen** auf der Landstraße - eventuell bei ungewöhnlich viel Verkehr lieber bis ins Dorf fahren und dort an einer sicheren Stelle wenden, um dann rechts abbiegend zur Burg fahren zu können!

Oben an der @photo[Burg Neuenstein](15804371) gibt es "Rotkäppchens Rosengarten" zu sehen und natürlich die (gut erhaltene) Burg. Auch ein Naturgarten ist vorhanden. Gastronomie gibt es dort aber (Stand 2024) nicht regelmäßig.

Der Rückweg nach Bad Hersfeld kann exakt wie der Hinweg absolviert werden. Zur Abwechslung sind aber hier zwei kleine Alternativ-Stücke aufgezeigt:
So kann man zwischen den Dörfern Saasen und Aua nach der kurzen steilen Abfahrt das Linksabbiegen zur Unterquerung der Autobahn durch eine @point[Geradeausfahrt](d,28243.87) parallel zur Autobahn ersetzen und dann durch @point[zweimaliges Linksabbiegen am Ende des Weges](d,29404.58) weider @point[auf die ursprüngliche Strecke gelangen](d,29930.08).

Ebenso kann man im weiteren Verlauf nicht vor Allmershausen links abbiegen, sondern der offiziellen Beschilderung des Radwegs R10 folgend @point[geradeaus fahren](d,36185.82) und so durch ein Waldstück nach Bad Hersfeld gelangen. Man muss dann nur in Bad Hersfeld @point[nach der in den Ort führenden Abfahrt links abbiegen](d,39142.5), um wieder @point[auf die ursprüngliche Strecke zu gelangen](d,39232.09).
