Route Details

We start at Bryan Park Pool at 1100 Woodlawn Ave where there is plenty of parking in the mornings.  This route explores the countryside west of Bloomington.  There is not a Bloom County, no Opus, but we start at Bloomington and go through Bloomfield.

Right off the bat there's some climbing to warm you up as we ride on Rockport Rd by some @photo[limestone quarries](1135343).  There are a couple of early convenience stores and one should stock up at the Marathon or at Whitehall.  The 25 mile food stop's status is not very dependable.

We climb up Whitehall Hill and then turn left onto State Ferry Rd at the top.  This is a fun and long downhill and then we hook back onto IN-43, for a little ways but then turn onto Porter Ridge.  You may remember a reality show on the Discovery Channel with that title and yes, indeed, we'll be riding right past @photo[Country Auto Parts](1135345) and y'all are welcome to stop in, dad gummit!

Freeman's food status is unpredictable, but this is a definite stop at the diner or convenience store if they're open.  The terrain flattens out a bit as we head down to Worthington and stop at a Subway and or convenience store.  There's another Subway about ten miles later in Bloomfield, the @photo[county seat](1135346) of Greene County.

After leaving Bloomfield we head north on IN-157 and head to the @photo[Tulip Trestle](1135370), one of the longest train trestles in the country.  Warning , though, this is one of the roughest roads with all the ups and downs, potholes, and gravelly spots.  This is especially evident after the trestle till Solsberry.

@photo[Yoho's General Store](1135371) in Solsberry is a famous haven for all bicyclists in the area.  It wasn't always so modern looking.  For so many years old Mr Yoho kept it open just for all the farmers to hang out around the pot belly stove and pass along stories, fact or fiction.  He sold a few snacks, candy bars, and kept a cooler full of pops and Yew Hoo's for us cyclists.  Well Mr Yoho died about 2011 and Cook Foundation renovated it to save this southern Indiana landmark.

Now refreshed we finish the route on IN-43, IN-48, and Vernal Pike.  As we get closer to Bloomington, pay attention as Vernal Pike is being re-routed over the new I-69 onto 17th St.  All of this should construction should be done by the end of 2016.
