Route Details

Antalya, Turkey, might or might not be on your cycling radar, but we're here to tell you that it should be!

Aside from being a hotspot for many nations, from prehistoric times to  Alexander The Great, the Ottomans, and now the Republic of Turkey, Antalya is a worthy contender for your next cycling trip.

Even though it is classified as a "tourist hotspot" you can easily escape the glamour and dive deep into the Western Taurus Mountains and explore this open-air museum.

## The Route:
This route is a great way to dip your toes into the rich history of Southern Turkey. It offers a great mix of mostly road, a bit of gravel, tasty pastries, historical sights, and amazing vistas accessible to many fitness levels. With a single climb and fairly tame gravel (easily rideable with 28c), this route is the perfect day trip route to see historically important ruins and experience the countryside of Antalya.

Starting from the Liman neighborhood, preferably from @poi[The Sudd coffee shop](75941264), the route heads north towards the foothills of the Western Taurus Mountains. The main road that cuts north can be busy at times, but the shoulder is wide enough to get you out towards the mountains. Once you reach the giant boulder, you can't miss it, in front of you, traffic pretty much slows down.

Meandering along backcountry roads. Passing by dispersed villages, the route passes by the roadside bakery run by Ali and his family. I highly recommend you stop for breakfast and tea and maybe @photo[share a table with one of the locals](13270367).

After that, the route continues along the main road, and after crossing the bridge, a quick turn left gets you off that main road and into quieter back country roads.

A few turns here and there, you'll reach a road that separates the forest on your right from the farms on your left. Suddenly, you're in the woods. Although it's mostly paved, we threw in a few gravel sections for two reasons: 
* A ride-around option to avoid busy roads.
* Short cuts unnecessary reach around.
* Back road gravel here is fairly accessible to many riders.
* Gives access to hidden viewpoints!

So as soon as you reach that left bend in the pavement, continue straight@photo[ toward the aqueduct](13270346). Go under the aqueduct and continue on this @photo[easy gravel](13270368) section before rejoining the paved road again on the side.

@photo[This road climbs up a Mesa](13270349), leading to the upper Antalya valley and farmlands. From there, you'll reach the small village of Nebiler, where you'll ride on wide shoulders on the main road to Döşemealtı. Once there, the ruins of Evdir Han are just a stone's throw away north of the main road.

I highly recommend you take your time with the ruins; there are so many small details everywhere you look; perhaps bring an extra snack from the bakery to eat while you explore.

Once done and ready to continue, follow the route north alongside the aqueduct to your right. The route goes through a few neighborhoods, and once you reach the water channel, @poi[it turns to gravel](75941276). I found 28c tires to be good enough, but consider going a bit bigger if you want more reassurance.

The gravel section connects you to a paved road west of the valley, riding alongside the foothills of the Taurus Mountains. Before reaching the pavement, though, there's a mosque on the other side of the water channel with ice-cold water. The locals were beyond thrilled to see a biker at their mosque the last time I passed by there.

The paved road after the gravel section can see some traffic, so pay attention to that. However, aside from that, it should be a smooth sail to the main road down the line. As you near the main road, you'll pass by an @poi[old building](75941279) that must’ve been an underground storage or something kind of cool to check out.

Once you reach the main road, @poi[take caution of traffic as you cross to the other side.](75941280) Once you do, ride the wide shoulder and enjoy the slight slope down back towards the small village of Nebiler, where you were earlier in the day.

From there, the route should be familiar all the way back, but the thing to pay attention to are @poi[the views of the Western Taurus Mountains!!](75941273) 
Jawdropping, you say?

By the time you get back to Liman, you might be hungry (I sure was!), so consider stopping @poi[here](75941267) for a meal to end the day.

This route has a great mix of everything Antalya, a little history, some forest roads, a bit of gravel, amazing coffee, and unique views.

# Important Reminders

Antalya can be very hot in the summer from July to late August, so if you find yourself there in the summer, leave early and head towards the mountains for better weather.
