Route Details

This route begins in the scenic town of Cold Spring, right along the Hudson River. The pier is a great spot to take in @photo[the view](16459674) of the Highlands on both sides of the river. You also begin to get a sense of the rich history, from the colonial era to more recent times. You begin climbing almost from the beginning as the route ascends a few paved and dirt roads. @poi[Crossing Rt.9](125457206) should be done with great care as it is a very heavily trafficked road. You may prefer to continue to the stoplight at Rt.301 and cross there instead. Once on the east side you'll enter Fahnestock State Park on @photo[School Mtn Road Trail](16459680). You'll need good navigational skills to follow the turns. Eventually you will exit the forest near scenic [Glynwood Farm](https://www.glynwood.org/). @photo[Sunken Mine Rd](16459660) is a gem, but take care as the road surface can be rough with large ruts in a few places. Note the @photo[historic plaque](16459663) as you turn onto Albany Post Rd, one of the oldest dirt roads in the region. Along the road there are multiple @photo[mile markers](16459662) from the old mail route. @photo[Another plaque](16459665) at the top of the long climb explains much of the history of the road. The route concludes with several more fast and fun dirt road descents as you make your way back down to the river.

* There is free parking at the @poi[West Point Foundry Preserve](125457211). Alternatively, the route begins at the Cold Spring @poi[train station](125457208) (Metro North Railroad, Hudson Line)
* Recommend minimum 38mm wide tires at lower pressure. Perhaps even wider for more comfort and control on the rougher trail sections
* You'll enjoy this route if you prefer exploring off the beaten path
* Be prepared for lots of climbing, some on rough dirt roads
* Stunning in the autumn, but equally fun in spring and summer
