Meander thru dense forests and open farm country on this multi-surface gravel route in Dutchess County, New York. Featuring about 40% unpaved roads, plenty of climbing, and many scenic views.

Routendetails

The tiny hamlet of Wassaic, New York provides the launching point for this ride. The train station just north of town is the final stop on the [MTA Metro North Harlem Line](https://new.mta.info/map/22461). Riding out of town you will quickly cross Rt22 (take care doing so as traffic is moving at 55+mph) and begin climbing the beautiful Deep Hollow Rd. For the next ~40 miles you will ride past many @photo[small farms](16128875) dotting the landscape of Dutchess County. There are abundant @photo[open views](16128883) across the hills and valleys, a couple of which reach across the Hudson River to the Catskills. In between there are also sections of dirt roads passing thru @photo[heavily forested](16128893) areas, which will be a welcome respite from the hot sun on summer days. The charming town of Millbrook provides opportunity for refilling water bottles and grabbing some lunch. If coffee is all you're after the @photo[All That Java shack](16128895) is the perfect stop. Or @poi[Babette's Kitchen](109915467) has great bakery and sandwiches. After leaving town you'll start the long climb up Tower Hill, before the final glorious descent winding down a deep ravine to Rt22.

* The @poi[Wassaic train station parking lot](132616422) has free parking on weekends and holidays. Alternatively, there is @poi[free parking in the nearby town of Wassaic](132616423) that the route passes thru after the first half mile of rail trail.
* Recommend minimum 38mm wide tires at lower pressure
* The dirt roads have varying surfaces- some are fast hardpack, while others are looser
* The town of Millbrook has a few excellent coffee/food stops (@poi[All That Java](109915468) highly recommended)
* The first part of the route before Millbrook (about 43 miles) doesn't have any resupply options (unless going slightly off-route in Bangall), so bring plenty of water and snacks for several hours of riding
* There are a few short sections of higher traffic roads (@slice[Rt44](d,72296.2,76646.4), @slice[Rt82](d,24068.9,25875.7), @slice[Rt22](d,84158.3,86766.7)), so take greater care when riding on those
* The route can be shortened many ways, such as only doing the southern half (south of Shunpike Rd) which would be 30 miles total
