The route begins at a local park outside of New Milford, CT. There is plenty of @poi[free parking at the Bulls Field](120454669) ball fields. You will quickly enter the @slice[New Milford River Trail](d,657.3,2736.6), followed by River Rd. This is a scenic stretch along the Housatonic River. It's easy to forget that vehicles can travel this road, so keep alert to that possibility. Soon you will pass the historic [Merwinsville Hotel](https://www.merwinsvillehotel.org/), and then shortly afterwards a @photo[beautiful marsh](18009353) along a scenic dirt road. Eventually you will reach Steep Rock Preserve and ride along the Shepaug River. The old railroad tunnel is a highlight; make sure to follow the track closely in order to find it. The route eventually passes [Mine Hill Distillery](https://minehilldistillery.com/) if you fancy a tasting.

The route is just over 50% unpaved, so wider gravel tires are a must. The unpaved sections are mostly hardpack dirt with loose gravel on top. Nothing too rough, but plenty of loose gravel to keep your hands committed to the handlebar. The climbing is steady, but not terribly difficult. @slice[Shinar Mountain Road](d,31159.7,32656.3) is probably the most challenging since it is steep, loose gravel. But stick with it and you'll be rolling over the top before you know it.

* @slice[Walker Brook Rd](d,26767,31050.4) is a wonderful gradual gravel descent that follows a stream thru the forest
* @slice[Steep Rock Preserve](d,36202.5,39485.6) is a beautiful park where you will see hikers and horseback riders
* There is a decent amount of climbing, including the challenging @slice[Shinar Mountain Road](d,31159.7,32883.3)
* Be very careful @poi[crossing Rt 202](120454675), as it has fast moving traffic
