Route Details

Be prepared by bringing water with you. There are no amenities beyond ample parking at the Horse Butte trailhead east of Bend. Once you start the trail you enjoy the large ponderosa pines in a beautiful setting. The trail incorporates many features unique to Bend. The trail is flowy, tight, incorporates a few rocky sections without steep climbs, yet provides amazing views of the east, north and west on a clear day from Kelsey Butte. Riders cross China Hat Road at the end of the pavement section at mile 18.4. The section of trail from China Hat back to the trailhead is called Coyote Trail near the Boyd Cave road/trail. You can also take a side trip to the Boyd Cave.

As the trail opens up around mile 14 all the way back to the trailhead, hidden rocks along the narrow trail can cause trouble. Be careful to stay center and not hit a rock on your pedal.

You can ride this trail either direction. Winter doesn't hit the east side of Bend as significantly so this is a great winter/spring riding destination. You can enjoy this into the summer, however the open areas between mile 18 and the trailhead can become soft and sandy.
