Our favorite rides in beautiful Bend, OR
This great sample of the Phil's Trail area includes a start/return to Webcyclery in the Old Mill District area while soaking in the great single track on Ben's, Phil's, Expressway, ELV and COD.
A visit to the Bend, Oregon area would not be complete without a mountain bike ride taking in the trails within the Phil's Trail network just west of town. Typically riding the trails is limited to April-November but occasionally mild winters allow for winter time riding. Take note that some trails in this area are one way. Many cyclist and runners enjoy the trails so watch for others and an occasional dog too.
On this ride, warm up your legs riding in the wide bike lanes along Colorado Ave or hop on the multi-use path running along the Colorado Ave, Century Dr and present again once you turn on to Metolius Ave from Mt Washington Ave all the way to the Highlands Trail. You soon reach the Phil's area trailhead which does have a pit toilet but no water. The single track flows fast and smooth along this route. Travel up Ben's, a one directional trail, to the 'Red Road' where you jump on one directional Phil's trail. Enjoy Phil's down the 'canyon. You know the canyon section is over as you reach the 'Flaming Chicken' roundabout'. Yes, art in a trail roundabout. Start heading back to town via ELV which connects to COD. COD will keep you focused with a few rock sections. None of them are too difficult though. From COD pass near the Tetherow golf course clubhouse. Finish your ride by taking the dirt/paved Haul trail that parallels Century Drive and Colorado Ave. Stop by the Deschutes Brewery for a tour or sample as you head back to Webcyclery.
Enjoy the ride.
