Sometimes a nice out and back road ride is all you want. This ride incorporates a road with great bike lanes while in town and a quiet road with few vehicles as you hit the turn around point.

Route Details

This ride is great on a road bike or even a cross bike in less favorable weather.  Except for days with fresh snow, the road is ridable year round.

Start from @poi[Webcyclery](962545) and head out on Brookswood Blvd.  This road has is smooth and enjoyable.  Stop by @point[CE Lovejoy's Market](275,0.612) at mile 4.2 for a refreshment or the gas station at the Highway 97 overpass at mile 6.0.  The busiest section of road is from Highway 97 to the turnoff at China Hat Road on Knott Road between miles @slice[6-7.4](340,65). The bike lane is wide but there is a bit of traffic.  Thankfully it is a short section.

Once you turn onto China Hat Road, ride by @point[Lost Tracks golf course](438,0.97) and start watching the houses and city life disappear quickly. You will find yourself on a chip and sealed road that has great ponderosa pines.  This is pretty flat profile route great for a recovery day or a new cyclist wanting to get a few miles under their belt.  Anticipate only three or four vehicles passing by when riding on China Hat Road.  The wind will most likely be at your back so enjoy the feeling as you ride east on this road.

The landscape opens up and provides views east of Bend as you come to the @point[turn around point](770,1) which is a cattle guard across the road.

As you approach the turn around and the landscape opens up to high dessert open tundra, enjoy sweeping views of the Cascades from Mt. Jefferson to Mt. Bachelor to the west, Smith Rocks to the north and Horse Ridge to the east.  This is a great spot for a panoramic photo.

Head back the way you came enjoying scenery and views as you travel west back to town while catching a glimpse of a cascade peak peaking out from the trees. *Plan for a little wind in your face if a breezy day with a little extra effort as you pedal on China Hat Road*.  The wind will ease up after you turn on to Brookswood Blvd.
