June and I went on a bike ride to Ox Bow Park after lunch. We wanted to test out her new GPS again. I started feeling weak when we got to Ox Bow, so we rested about 20 minutes, and I ate a Clif Bar and drank water. We had a nice tail wind going home, but as we got close to Goshen, I started feeling weak and unsteady. When we stopped at a crossing, I was having trouble standing up, but I thought I could make it home. We crossed Main St. and I started to wobble, eventually running off the trail into some tall grass and falling over. June helped me get my left foot unclipped, but I was too weak to stand up. She offered to ride home and get the van, and I agreed. Soon after she left it occurred to me that she would never be able to lift me into the van by herself, so I decided to call 911. I told the operator my condition, but I wasn’t sure where I was. Eventually, she figured it out from the cell phone signal. The EMT people arrived in a few minutes and lifted me onto a gurney into the ambulance. They checked my temperature, blood pressure, oxygen level, blood sugar level and hydration. Everything was normal, and I had no chest pain. They asked if I wanted to go home (no charge) or to the Emergency Room, which would b expensive. I agreed to go home since all my signs were good. They loaded my bike into the ambulance along with my helmet and water bottle, and we started home.
I tried to call June to tell her not to come back, but she didn’t answer. I finally got her on the third try as the ambulance was going toward home, and she was already at the place where I fell. When we got home, they asked if I could walk to the door, and I was able to stand up and walk out the door of the ambulance and into the house. I thanked them for the ride, went inside and sat down in my recliner. I continued to feel normal that evening and went for a short walk, too. I spent most of the evening laying down on the couch.
Because we didn't turn off the GPS on the bike, it continued to track us as I rode home in the ambulance: https://ridewithgps.com/trips/100600051 You can see where I fell from where the speed chart changes from 10 mph to 40+ mph.
