Happy New Year. Here's the details for yesterday's long ride.
Today's ride is the one postponed from last Wednesday due to the snow. I'm leading followed by five intrepid followers. Just the number I've booked the table for. John Mac, Iain M, Keith H, Bob M and Lilo B follow me up Chandlers Hill. Just past Langley Corner, we are briefly joined by Lisa E and Sally E, but they turn right towards Fulmer as we turn left towards Wexham. So I don't need to ring the pub for extra seats then! At Hollybush Hill, Keith turns back. The remaining five of us head through Farnham Royal to our coffee stop at Sunrise Cafe, Burnham Village.
Afterwards we take route 61 through Maidenhead and route 4 to Cox Green. After a waterlogged field, we are back on firm ground at the Knowl Hill Cycleway. It's quite exposed here, with a strong headwind, so progress is slow. Soon the welcome sight of the The Royal Oak comes into view. The food portions are generous, so much so that John Mac is giving away vegetables. I nick a sprout or two.
Our return journey is back along a similar route. Now we have a good tail wind. I reckon a spinnaker would have got me home without pedalling. It's getting very gloomy by the time we reach Bray, so it's time to put our lights on. Soon after the rain starts so we stop to put on our waterproofs. By Dorney Reach the rain is accompanied by hail and the temperature is dropping along with our spirits. We trudge on past Eton Wick and the College grounds. At Upton John leaves us. By Trenches the rain has eased and by Iver we are back in the dry.
Let's hope for better weather next time.
Cheers Bernie
