Just when you start wondering if you’re going to make it to the planned destination, the wind changes or you get a 35 mile gentle downhill with a wind at your back. And then to make me feel really good, I found some cookies that seem to be left for people coming over the border. I was riding just within the border all day. Also when there are 5 strands of barbed wire,that’s a border wall. There was lots of that.
Last night I slept at a Mexican church. I rolled into Ft. Hancock where there is a sad looking motel that seemed relatively expensive. And when I passed a church with picnic tables in the back I decide to ask if I could stay there. The wind was starting to get stiff but by the time I spoke with the pastor about it, she welcomed me into the church to stay in one of the carpeted classrooms. Wow, was that a god sent because when I went out to get some supper, the gusts almost shoving me off the road, probably >50mph. The church had a great kitchen, clean bathrooms, showers and protection from the wind. How kind and trusting to let a stranger into their space.
