Alice go boom. Get big ouchie!
Strange day. The weather start off nice but then it was foggy the whole way down the coast shrouding the gorgeous views.
As soon as we turned on to Bonny Doon, it was sunny again. Fortunately it was cooler than normal. It wasn't until we got to the top that it got really hot. It stayed that way pretty much all the way to Big Basin where cooled off again for the rest of the ride.
On the way to Pescadero, three guys got into our paceline and were messing it up. They were speeding up and cutting in and then slowing down. Alice wasn't happy about that so she picked up the pace to get away from them but they just sped up with us and then all of a sudden we were heading down the road at high speed when we should've been taking it easy.
After Bonny Doon my legs were feeling toasty. The heat didn't help at all, nor did my lack of food. I messed up and didn't bring enough since I'm so used to stopping for lunch. I think I had half the calories I normally do and later in the ride I started to feel like I was bonking. Luckily I never fully did.
Lodge Rd. was more beat up than the last time I did it. I was dropped on the climb but I caught up to Alice on the bumpy descent. Just as I caught up to her, I was about two bike lengths behind her, all of a sudden she just crashed. She took the brunt of it on her knee and shin.
She was zoning out and she thinks she hit a bump and lost control. From my view it seemed to come out of the blue. The handle bar tape and rear quick release got pretty badly scraped but everything else was fine.
She got patched up by a Ranger once we got to the Big Basin Headquarters. People seemed worried about doing the dirt of North Escape Rd even before the crash. After it was pretty much off the table. That was too bad. Felt like of the goals for the recon, answering the question of whether Lodge Rd. was open was the only thing we figured out. And with the crash, it means it's not going to be on the route anyway.
