Part 2 of ride: After the last aide station before the big climb, I continued to ride with Susan until the elevation got the better of me.
However, descending into the valley, I felt even more tired than usual, then started feeling dizzy. This didn't feel like just the altitude, it was something else. I pulled over partway down the descent for a few minutes in order to rest. These descents require a high degree of concentration, and I didn't want a minor lapse to cause a problem. After about 20 minutes, I started riding again, and was able to complete the descent into the final aid station of the day. There, I had a very late lunch (that single peanut butter sandwich at the previous aid stations didn't qualify!!) and made it into Avon. Lawrence had other plans that night, so Susan, Art and I met up for dinner at a local pizzeria across the street from the hotel.
After I arrived at Avon, I looked up the product literature and found that the pain meds an emerg physician had prescribed for me the previous day in Steamboat was prone to induce fatigue and dizziness, especially after exertion. I wish he had told me. At any rate, knowing this, I cut down on the meds and didn't have problems for the rest of the tour. Problem solved.
