Rode solo from CSUN over Santa Susana Pass, around the Big Sky loop, and along the Moorpark Ridge (Broadway, Stockton and Bradley); took Somis, etc. towards Pt Magu; and returned via Yerba Buena and Westlake Village. It was a hot day, but I left at 7:30, and Moorpark was not hot; the beach area was overcast and quite cool. Yerba Buena may have been warm, but there was a saving breeze. I had nothing to complain about regarding the heat until I left Westlake Village for the ride back to Northridge.
This is a very enjoyable and scenic route which I highly recommend. The rough patch of road along Easy St is smoother going westward, so riding the Moorpark Ridge in the reverse direction from the usual for the SFVBC is actually nicer. Furthermore, during the summer, it gets you through the area before the temperatures rise too high for comfort, and then the beaches are never as bad. Another thing I liked very much about this route is that there were very few junk miles. The Big Sky loop and Moorpark Ridge areas are much nicer riding than the usual schlep along LA Ave. While it involves more climbing, why not? For future reference, if I have to go through Simi Valley and have the time, I would prefer to take this route out towards Camarillo. I would recommend parking to start this route anywhere from Westlake Village to Calabasas, and taking Valley Circle north to the Santa Susana Pass. There are two reasons. First, by so doing there would be almost no junk miles in this ride; almost every mile should have good scenery and good riding. Second, particularly if it is hot, by starting somewhere along the Conejo Valley corridor, you will finish soon after your descent from Mulholland and will not have to ride to CSUN or such in the heat of the day; first thing in the morning, it will be cool for the ride across the San Fernando Valley.
