The first "half" of this ride was the same as the Mulholland (Century) Challenge ride (with a modified, 113 mile course for 2019), that is the first leg of the "KOM Challenge", an annual series of 3 challenging century rides where a rider's time is combined for all 3 rides. Some people race it, some just do it for the challenge of doing it.
The "Challenge" course itself was broken into two parts, with the first going out to Topanga to do two climbing loops, one over Topanga and then Old Topanga, and the second up Stunt. The second part also involved two climbing loops, but started off with an unpleasant surprise, an early climb up Westlake Blvd, then out Kanan to PCH in order to climb Latigo. After that, we rode along Mulholland to Encinal, which we descended to PCH in order to finish the last tough climb of the "Challenge" course, Decker.
My Garmin died on Mulholland just past Decker, about 9.4 miles (& 500' of elevation gain) from the ride headquarters, which was the end of the "Challenge" ride and also served as the "lunch" stop for the double century riders. The straight, 45 degree line in the middle of the map connects the two gps tracks of my ride.
Due to a lack of fitness I had to walk some steep pitches on Decker which slowed things down considerably.
The Santa Monica Mountains showcased the wonders of Mother Nature's with the stark contrast of the blackened rocks, trees and bushes from the recent, terrible fires against the explosion of colors from lush, green grasses and fields of incredible blooms, mostly vibrant yellow with swaths of blue and purple from lupine and such.
When I started back out for the last 82 miles, I was faced with the steepest part of the ride for the second time, the climb up Westlake Blvd to Mulholland. But for the road closures due to damage dating back to the fires, we would only have climbing Westlake Blvd this one time. Instead, this retraced the second part of the Challenge ride to intersection of Kanan and Latigo, We then rode Latigo in reverse. Once I reached to second bump of Latigo the rest of the ride was pretty easy all the way to Norwegian Grade (Moorpark Rd to Olsen Rd in Thousand Oaks). After that little climb, which is not bicycle friendly, there are just some reasonable rollers left to the finish.
My Garmin having died, I recorded the last "half" of the double century using the RWGPS app on my iPhone.
My totals for what was a long day (I finished three minutes after midnight): 195.8 miles and 18,504' of elevation gain.
