The SFVBC's #801C route, a loop from CSUN over Santa Susana Pass, around the "Big Sky" loop, out through Simi Valley and Camarillo to Pt. Mugu, and along PCH and returning to the Valley via Topanga. I was riding my single speed; Kim met me at CSUN, and we rode with Michael and Stan. Bill started with us, but turned back shortly after Santa Susana. From the top of Santa Susana, I went ahead so as to not hold up the show while slugging round the Big Sky loop, and I made it to the descent and waited when the group came along, including Kieth and Carrie. Kieth picked up the pace a little more than I would have liked, but attempted to keep within my speed limit, which seems to be around 21-21.5 mph for any extended time. I can manage just about 23 mph for a short time, but the cadence is too high for me to comfortably maintain, and I begin to "spin out" at around 27 mph. When we made the turn in the fields of Camarillo after passing Potrero, there was the usual head wind and Kim was dropped and I was unable to help her bridge the gap to get back on the train that Kieth was leading. Kim and I stopped for a Mountain Dew at Neptune's Net, and the others were waiting to regroup just beyond, but we did not see them as they waited for us. We went on from there together for a while, but we took our third break (the first rest stop was at the bagel shop in Camarillo when we passed US-101), but Michael had gone on while I was in Pavillions; Kim was ready to move on, but the others were having pizza, so we parted ways. Carrie lives out there somewhere, and so she did not continue on much further from there, having started from out there. I found the steep pitches on Topanga leading up to the village to be as much as I could handle on the single speed; it became quite the ordeal to continue turning over the crank without stalling. We found Michael at the store at the corner of Fernwood Pacific, and stopped there for a popsicle. Keith and Stan came along and also partook. Keith took Old Topanga back, which was steeper than I wanted. Kim and I rode back with Michael and Stan until we separated on Ventura Blvd to head back to CSUN while they each were riding back to their respective homes. This was pretty much a perfect ride on the single speed, but Malibu Canyon would probably be more feasible than that short stretch of Topanga, which was a little over the top... It is almost a mile long (0.9 miles), with almost 370' of climbing, for an avg grade of about 8%. While RWGPS reports the max. grade as only 10.2%, my guess is that is due to data averaging, and the max. is more like 13%.
(I did not start my Garmin until late, thus losing about a dozen minutes and maybe 2.25 miles of data.)
