Another FB ride up to Sherman Pass. I rode with Tom Roseman, but many friends were also on the ride. Ken Mathis, Bonzo, and Terri Boykins started very early; Ken Mathis and Bonzo turned back on the way down into Kennedy Meadows due to the smoke haning in the basin from the Broder Fire. (Tom and I wore N95 masks; I'm not sure the smoke was all that bad, but better to use the masks since I had them. However, it would be MUCH better to have masks with an exhalation port whenever physical exertion is involved because, without it, the breathing rate is slower and exhaling makes the mask hot.)
Also out for the ride to Sherman Pass were Loren Smith, Andrew Valiunas, Daniel Patrick, and Stefan Dragoshinov. Roland and Nicole von Kriegenbergh alternated driving SAG and riding for that group, and they had a nice picnic lunch up at the Pass! Hugh Murphy also showed up and was very generous in also driving SAG for about the first half of the ride, and provided water, Coke and Enduralite tablets!
Then, there were 3 intrepid riders who conquered the Son of Death route, TJ Knight, Kevin Bilbee, and Brook Henderson. TJ's wife and daughter (Erin & Olivia) drove SAG for that group.
I spent Friday nigh at the home of Tom Roseman and his wife, Debbie, who was kind enough to drive SAG for most of the route with us. Tom traded off with at what he and the other locals call "Pinyon Pass" for the awesome descent; she sure flies down the descents!
I had a rear flat on the descent, but it was a quick fix and I enjoyed the rest of the descent. It is steep enough to pick up plenty of speed (I was at 53.2 mph at one point), and the road is nice and smooth, so I don't feel as compelled to moderate my speed as much on that particular downhill.
