Sunday 5th July 2015. Chris Kinsey's leads. Followers are: Lilo Bleasdale, Jim Swan, Iain MacDonald, John Hare, new guy Steve and me.
An interesting switchback route out of Uxbridge, takes us along the Grand Union, up to Horn Hill, down Stoney Lane and along the Chess valley to elevenses at Chesham. We are met by Dave Pack and Liliane, who have beaten us by about 15 mins by taking a more direct route. The originally planned venue, The Brown Sugar, is apparently packed out, so we refresh ourselves at the nearby Caffe Nero.
We are depleted in number as we leave, as it's just Chris, Iain, Lilo, Jim and me for the next leg of the journey. Up Chesham Vale, and Heath End, we descend into the valley again, past Tring, and then a relatively flat route to our lunch stop at the Bluebells Tea Rooms at Marsworth. I plump for a BLT sandwich, something light I think. When it arrives there is the best part of a pig in there between two small loaves, plus crisps and a side salad. I know I didn't need to eat it all, but waste not, want not, as they say.
Back in the saddle, I am not in the best state to climb out of the valley at this point, so it is a good thing that the next six miles or so into Berkhamsted, is on the flat. I would have been quite happy to stay in the valley all the way to Rickmansworth and beyond, but it is not to be. We climb up to Ashley Green and continue our journey, through Flaunden to our tea stop at St Michael's Church in Chenies.
After refreshments, Lilo leaves us, and the remaining four of us continue through Chorleywood and Maple Cross, and disperse at West Hyde. Iain and I continue to Uxbridge and beyond.
Regards Bernie G.
