Todays ride was the first ride that I had taken on my Gravel bike since I have changed the tires to smooth road tires. I was not expecting the change to be very big. I would have expected to have a mild increase in speed, perhaps a little bit more
comfort. I would have been impressed simply to climb the hills on the route a little faster than I had before. What I got was something altogether different that exceeded my expectations. First a little bit of a back story.
I started this journey with the thought of simply that if I am to pay for a free service I am sure going to make sure I get my moneys worth out of it. What is the point of a social media platform that tracks your daily usage if you are not going to use it daily? On that day, I started to workout on the app, everyday. The goal for this workout would be a simple twenty miles. In my mind I had always achieved this goal on the open road. Being that I had ridden my bike ten miles from my home and ten miles back. Be it from the house to the park or from the mall to the house, seeing myself in my minds eye was encouraging. So I started pedaling. I purchased a speed tracker, a cadence tracker, and a bicycle trainer with a training block. All through the December months I had taken no less than an hour to spin the bike under the resistance of the trainer, to twenty miles.
In the beginning it was hard. Spinning the bike up to speed was a challenge. Over time it was even harder to get up the will to toss my leg over the top tube to get on the bike. The hardest thing that I had to fast was to get out of bed, knowing that I was about to get on the bike and just pedal until I reached twenty miles. Those days were hard. Every morning, fighting the myself to just get out of bed and get on the bike.
“You don’t have to do this.”
“There is no throne for this.”
“This is stupid”
“Is not like there is money in at the end of this.”
Excused after excuse all told me time and time again that I didn’t have to get on the bike. Eventually, sometime during the day, I would simply take a deep breath and tell myself, “Its time to put in this work.”
I would reach my hand behind my neck to pull my shirt over my head, snap on my heart rate monitor, slip myself in to my cycling shorts and head toward the bike. Each day was one day completed, a day I completed something for me.
Day after day, week after week, I was able to look back on what I had done and how far I had come. This, was the motivation that I needed to get up and do it again. I had made myself stronger in the process of fighting for myself and I was happy about it.
I had heard that you can make your gravel bike, your only bike, just by adding a few accessories. A new set of tires or wheels can convert a gravel bike to a light trail bike, or a time trial bike. I wanted to test this theory. Hoping to convert my gravel bike I took it to the Local bike shop an asked for a second wheelset to covert it to a road bike. The better option, as it was suggested, was that I would simply change the tires. It would be cheaper and it was be easier, as I would not have to keep a second wheelset true. The financially minded suggestion had won the day. I placed the newly purchased tires on the gravel bike and took them on a route that I had done many times before. This route was not to flat (not by any means), and it was not hilly in the sense that there were many hills that I would have to negotiate. Instead this route was a series of hills that climbed to a summit before a congested descent brought the rider back to the start.
On my gravel tires, I could easily average 13mph, with a duration of one hour, thirty-five minutes and fifty-seven seconds. Today, on my gravel bike with road tires, I averaged 15 miles per hour with a duration of one hour, twenty-four minutes and eight-teen seconds. As of today, this was my fastest ride I have done on this loop. I don’t know if this is a result of my continued training or the tires. Either way I am impressed with this little change. If nothing else this proves to me that consistency yields results.
