The weather finally broke our way. Lin once again pronounced “It’s a beautiful day” and once again, she was right.
The Kokosing Gap Trail runs 13.7 miles from the Mount Vernon to Danville with pit stops at Gambier Station and the Howard tunnel. This lovely rail-trail runs through the rolling hills of Knox county past picturesque Amish farms. It’s one of our favorites. The western connection to the Heart Of Ohio Trail is nearing completion and we were told of work being done on the trail east of Danville that will eventually connect to the Holmes County trail at Killbuck. The Ohio to Erie Trail is nearing completion.
We were joined by two guests - Ben on his all-weather commuter Catrike Expedition and Rick on a well tricked out ICE trike.
Ben is a LMT who commutes to work daily on the Olentangy River Trail. Rick is the Trike Guy for Bicycle One.
Under cloudy skies and cool breezes, we rode northeast from Mount Vernon and soon paused to coax a corn snake off of the trail. At Gambrier Station we posed for the mandatory group shot on the locomotive. A bit up the trail, Rick pointed out a huge eagle's nest across the fields from us. The trail was busy with many small children wobbling across the trail on their tiny bikes. This is not a good trail for time-trialers and personal-besters but we were in no hurry.
The day brightened and warmed. At the Danville trailhead we took a snack break and shed some layers. The return trip was uneventful but very pleasant. Back at Mount Vernon, we packed up and headed to Jake’s for fried mushrooms and beer.
Only one mechanical. At Jakes, the rear tire on Ben’s car picked up a small puncture and slow leak. We could not remove the frozen-on wheel but Jay, an employee of the local BP station saved the day with a can of spray tire sealant. Ben made it home OK.
