**Lynn Woods West Side Hike:** Lynn Woods is an all season park that can be enjoyed for many hours and many different activities. Part of my Eastern Mass Hiking Series, the Lynn Woods is a treasure of geology and organic splendor.

**About the Hike:**  
You will need 70oz water, and some food. Hiking distance is about 4 Miles, but hiking time can vary from 2 to 4 hours depending on your stops. Most of the hiking is adjacent to Breeds Pond, Birch Pond, and Tomlins Swamp.  From breathtaking views of the ponds, to the towering cliffs of Undercliff Path, this is a hike were you will stop a lot just to look.  If you are at Dungeon Rock on a day when the gate is open, you can venture inside for an extra exploring experience.  You will need the brightest flash-light you can carry. As always, bring a good camera.

**Hiking the Route:**

You can start at @poi[Pennybrook Road](2553620) parking lot, off of Walnut Street, (Parking is free and usually available) The Lynn Woods park house is located at this entrance, no fee to use the park. The hike starts just behind the park house at a stone Stairway Trail that leads up to the Lynn Woods @poi[Rose Garden](2668033), and ampitheater trail. If in season, worth a moment to look.

Past this area, and at the @poi[Trail Head](2529108), you will head straight over to @poi[Birch Pond](2553618) to start a 1 Mile hike along the shoreline trail. This trail is rugged. It is not smooth walking, and it is too hard for mountain biking. Rock scrambles and bolder jumping is frequent, but fun. Lots of very scenic pond overviews, some exposed rock faces for sitting, and marshy coves

At the exit cove you will be on trails frequented by horses and mountain bikers, so keep alert.  This next part of the hike takes you to the top of @point[Mt Moriah](d,3694.08) for a quick view of the park before your trek down to Pennybrook Road - yes the same road you parked on. If you need to bail this hike, this is the place for it. Follow Pennybrook back.

Continue the hike where you enter @point[Undercliff Path](d,4623.92), off of Fox Run Path. Undercliff is exactly as it sounds.  This is a long ½ mile of traversing Tomlins Swamp where you have the @photo[cliffs of Mount Gilead](2169301) above you. Some stunning rock formation views, along with a slender walking path through the swamp.  Once again, this trail is not for mountain bikes.

Up the hill from Undercliff Path is Dungeon Road, which will take you past @poi[Union Bolder](2668036) and over to @poi[Dungeon Rock](2553617).  When at Dungeon Rock, there are no signs, just go over between the @photo[crevasse](2169306) and you will see the iron door entrance.  If it is unlooked, go for it, if not, maybe just climbing to the top of the area will be good enough.

Heading down from Dungeon Rock, out the back way is a steep downhill @photo[stone stairway](2169307) that gets you back to the trail system.  Follow this trail, cross Waycross Path, and head on to Jackson Path.

Once on @photo[Jackson Path](2169308) you will cross a small wooden bridge.  On the left after the bridge is a small unmarked trail. Follow this to the water’s edge of @photo[Breeds Pond](2169310) for one more ½ mile of walking along the water’s edge.  Many wonderful view spots here.  Take your time, you are very close to the end of your hike. As always have a great time and contact me with any questions.
