Route Details

## **From Treo head to Winlock and down to Service Creek**

This route takes you from the high  range country through the Ponderosa Pines
in the Umatilla National forest.  After 30 miles you leave the forest and hit
the valley floor that runs in a parallel valley to the John Day River.  Here you experience
basalt geological formations, large ranches and ridges with names like Starvation,
Sourdough and Muleshoe.

First you ride into the ghost town of @poi[Hardman](932311). After a brief period on level ground you descend into Rock Creek valley on RT 207 and in 10 miles you are at the @poi[Anson Wright Park](932280). Now settle in and enjoy the climb into the Umatilla National Forest as high desert gives way to towering Pondersoa Pines.  You pass the @poi[Morrow County OHV Park](934918) and continue your ascent for another 4 miles before you have an @poi[opportunity to stop](932281) and appreciate how much work you have done.  From here its a 6 mile descent on SR 207 before you hit Kahler Basin Road.  Watch your speed so you don't miss the turn!

Check out the amazing @poi[basalt lava formations](932284) while along Kahler Creek. Then watch out for the turn in 34.8 miles, its a sharp right on to Winlock and a climb out of Kahler Creek and up Sourdough Ridge.

In Winlock, stop at the @poi[Forest Service Garage](932285) for a break and to regroup. You have a choice to get to Service Creek**(1)**.   Now you trade the empty paved roads for @slice[10 miles of gravel](2186,518) that will leave the most apprehensive smiling.  Be sure to check out the @poi[open range corral](932286) and cattle loading chute on your way down into the @poi[pastoral valley](932282) 
If that isn't enough of 
a descent then you have the last 6 to Service Creek's @poi[Stagecoach Lodge](932283) to experience.

**(1)**Optional route is to descend Alder Creek Rd to SR 19 and then head back West to Service Creek's Stagecoach Lodge.
