This route is for those who love rolling countryside punctuated with occasional rollers, a pleasant climb or two, a bit of wine tasting and a section to let the horses run - what we call the Fern Hill "Freeway". It's a big loop starting in Hillsboro, traversing west to Verboort, heading south through Forest Grove - home to Pacific University - and then back through more beautiful rolling farm country and suburban Hillsboro.

## ROUTE:

You begin by Liberty High School in Hillsboro - take Cornelius Pass Exit N off OR 26. Leaving the school, you'll head west over OR 26 and then across what we term "@slice[The Churches](167,155)" - Scotch Church and Zion Church Roads.  Take a moment to notice the beautiful "[Old Scotch Church](http://oldscotchchurch.org/)" - first chartered in 1873 by immigrants from Aberdeen, Scotland. Then you'll go through Verboort, the home of the annual [Sausage Festival](http://www.verboort.org/dinner).  Shortly after turning on Thatcher Rd you'll see the @poi[Thatcher City Park](945235) - a restroom and water stop if needed.  Next is Forest Grove - home to Pacific University.  Enjoy the campus feel on College Way (or explore the campus more before leaving) and then turn onto 21st Ave and try @poi[Maggies Buns](945236) - a long-time cycling community supporter and home to great coffee and buns - and a [Portland Velo](http://www.portlandvelo.net/) favorite.

Now you'll ride out of town on Ritchey before starting to @slice[climb on Carpenter Creek and Plumlee](878,85) - followed by a @slice[quick descent](962,28). At the intersection of Plumlee and Dilley look to your left - you might see some bison roamimg the @poi[L Bar T Bison Ranch](967132). Shortly you'll see the @poi[Montinore Estate Winery](1017994) on your right - open 7 days a week, from 11am to 5 pm for tasting and sales.  Then it's across OR 47 to the @slice[Fern Hill "freeway"](1065,148) - a place to open the throttle for a few miles if you're so inclined. Turning right onto Geiger, notice the Fernhill Wetlands area and trail.  Shortly you'll ride by the Forest Hills Golf Course - another place to stop for food or restrooms if needed. From here its about 15 miles of relatively flat riding back to Hillsboro - enjoy the open riding on Johnson School and Minter Bridge Rds.  If in-season, enjoy the fruit at @poi[Duyck's Peachy-Pig Farm](1017995) on Johnson School Rd. If not, just enjoy the humor. Once you reach about mile 37 you're back in town, so be more cautious of traffic.

Before reaching the start you'll pass @poi[Longbottom's Coffee](945234) - a good place for a latte and snack before putting the bike away.
