Seven. Beautiful cool and sunny day with no noticeable wind. Day one of a 3 day bike packing tour I did with my brother Tom and 2 of his riding buddies from Raleigh. GAP trail refers to the Great Allegheny Passage, a Rails-to-Trail route which runs from downtown Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Maryland. Starting point was from Point State Park at the confluence of 3 rivers: The Ohio, The Allegheny and the Monongahela Rivers.
Our Monday night hotel was 4 miles from the start, so we rode over to mile 149 on Tuesday morning, then backtracked by the hotel on the GAP trail. We eventually joined up with the Youghiogheny River in McKeesport. This was the longest day of the week with the extra backtrack miles and we ended up the day at Connellsville and stayed at a great hotel overlooking the river.
This was my first loaded tour and everything worked out great. The Seven performed flawlessly (it was designed for this) even with the extra 35+ pounds of gear. Didn't break any speed records, as to be expected when the bike weighs 60+ pounds and the route is predominantly uphill. Over 3,000 ft of climbing but most of that was railroad grade at < 2%.
The group was great, lots of conversation and tons of laughter. First time riding with Tom in several years with the Covid gap. I am definitely in for doing this again, may do some local overnights around Chicagoland and/or Wisconsin.
