Long Ride - 17/8/16
What a lovely summers day for our jaunt to Fingest. 9 ventured on this ride and we headed the 17 miles to 11's at White Waltham Aerodrome. Coffee (and cake for some) in the sun watching the planes taxi and take off, very pleasant. Daydreaming over off we set to lunch via Hambledon lock in all it's summer splendour. The road from the lock to the Chequers at Fingest is one I find very pleasurable to ride, undulating with views and pleasant villages.
We arrived at the pub around 1.30 and ordered out food and sat in the garden and waited and waited and waited, the sun was beating down on us and time was marching on. Eventually, after an hour plus, food appeared. After a complaint asking why we were not told food would be a long time when we ordered and apology was offered and a free coffee for me at least. Off we set heading North and more undulating terrain and a right turn onto the Frieth road heading for Marlow. Marlow bridge was closed and passable to pedestrians. Then a left turn heading towards the climb up Quarry Wood Road but before the climb started I turned left and the road upto Gibraltar lane, still a bit of a climb.
Through Cookham and a left to Bourne end and Harvest Hill and on through lanes to Burham Beeches for tea, at this point Steve C and Wing commander Woodford left us for home. So 7 settled down to tea in the shade. Obviously the heat and hills took its toll on Captain Morgan (see picture). At this point I discharged myself from leader duties and we all headed in the direction of Uxbridge at various speeds. I went through Iver Thorney and down to Harlington and then onto home via Heston. A very pleasant days cycling with good company.
