Super duper foggy in morning when I left, and I figured I got of sorta early so I decided to go ahead and knock out hwy 280. It wasn't that bad but it was a bit busier than I would have liked. I think it was around 33 cars and trucks, and I counted 7 loaded log trucks heading to the OSB mill and one truck full of chickens heading to Vienna. But the radar is super bright and everybody passed without issue. The CSX bridge was not fun, had a couple cars behind with some approaching, but then strangely after the bridge I went the entire way to Cordele without another car passing.
Looks like they're in the process of widening 280 west of town, and it was even more foggy here. I used the gravel portion of the new bits that weren't open to slot in and make turns before cars approached and managed everything fine, although I was very glad to turn off and roll into GA Veteran's State Park. Then I rode beside the river for many miles on very quiet pavement to Montezuma, still in dense fog. I decided not to stop for anything in Montezuma and pushed on to Reynolds. I finally rode on some real dirt roads up to Marshallville, a nice town with a very stark difference in rich and poor houses. A town the size of maybe Abbeville but had the nicest houses of Hawkinsville and the poorest houses of Rochelle.
Reynolds was a pretty nice town, perhaps because of the extra revenue from the racetrack(Silver Dollar Raceway, a quarter mile drag strip). The downtown area was well kept and I was very glad to stop and get some food here at the Dollar General.
Only a few miles later I stopped at an abandoned house on a dirt road and took the opportunity to use my lightweight backpacking trowel, Felt a whole lot better afterwards.
I made my way west over to Junction City and found some really nice hills and interesting terrain, and a very cool old wooden bridge over the railroad. Soon enough I rolled into Talbotton and rode around town a bit marveling at several large grand churches and the courthouse. Town was pretty deserted. I stopped one more time at the Dollar General, got water at a church across the street and got moving.
The street I was supposed to take north out of town was a no go because the railroad bridge(an old wooden one) was missing, and so i tried to go around using hwy 41 but the connecting road shown on the map didn't exist and there weren't really any parallel roads to take. But 41 was very quiet and in any case I had a tailwind and it wasn't far to Woodland.
I rejoined my route north of Woodland and somewhere in Meriwether near the Cove I was nearly killed by a police chase of a person flying over a steep hill that I couldn't see coming, a couple of feet in my lane. I got off the road completely when I saw the cop flying over in pursuit, also a couple of feet over into my lane. Right after another cop came by, and passed an oncoming jeep at 70 in my lane and right before the blind hill. idiots. I had to get off the road completely.
All I could do was press on, and thankfully that was a very strange thing to see on such a normally quiet road, and the rest of the way through the Cove was beautiful.
Decided not to stop in Woodbury and pressed on into sunset on Jones Mill road. I was getting a bit tired around Gay and after eating and drinking a lot I felt pretty good but was running low on water. Bypassed the stores at hwy 16 as well because I felt good, and made it through PTC on barely any water but I still felt pretty good at the end.
