What a great route Mike! He changed where we we started from/ended so that changed how we left town and returned to town. Much smoother roads and bike trail, for the return. That was very nice. Started off with Mike and tandem and a couple others for the first 25 miles at about 19mph average. Decided I needed to throttle back a bit. The temp was under 32 and I was overdressed so heating up. Boot covers, long plank over pant, blue & green woolie base layers, bull vest, and windbreaker. Had cycling gloves + my thin gloves + thinker gloves. My hands never got cold and were probably too warm. Along Sandario Roger and his gal partner and teamed up to get to 3 Pts. I left there early and the train of other B groups with Steve and 3 other CO guys, totalling about 10 cyclists came by. Joined them until after the Border Control stop where just a bit up the road I had to stop and disrobe. Got rid of cycling boots, blank pants, black arm warmers, jacket, and gloves. Let the 2 woolies on. That was a mistake. Led a group of 3-4 stragglers S to Arivaca turn. Caught up with B group in Arivaca and left with them after getting water, apple pie. We went together to lunch in Tubac. Then as we B group went toward Rio Rico, they noticed one CO rider was not present., They stopped and eventually went back for him, dead battery. I continued on, knowing I was not doing the best and wanted to climb to rollers and Pendleton by myself. B group caught be going up climb to Patagonia. We rode into Patagonia together. They stopped longer than I wanted, so I got water and left for Sonoita and arrived there before they caught,. Another apple pie + gatorade, then since the sun already set, I donned the vest, arm warmers, and jacket. Should have put gloves on.
Meanwhile I saw bike lights coming toward Sonoita and guessed they would stop so I looked for a pee place. They did not stop and when I got back on the bike I never saw them again! Ugh. Finally at Los Reales turn, I put my gloves on and the temp was 41.
The bike trail back to campus was Awesome.
