The day was a most excellent riding day, bright and cool. We met at the newly refurbished Hurd Field parking area where some took advantage of the newly installed toilet facility.
We soon encountered some challenging inclines, made more so by auto traffic. As we entered Waltham we saw construction work for the new Cross Waltham bike trail, which will connect with the Mass Central Rail trail.
Speaking of that, we rode on the dirt path to the railroad bridge that connects to the current eastern terminus of the MCRT.
Things were going well as we passed through Weston neighborhoods, but went somewhat awry owing to the simultaneous occurrence of three confounding factors. First the Reedys forged ahead on their own be sure that they could meet up in a timely fashion with a friend arriving at Logan, As they left, I noticed that the route had somehow changed to road I had not intended. As I tried to get folks on my intended route, a sizable portion of the riders over shot the turn and headed off in a new direction.
I chased after them, but was thwarted by a closed railroad crossing gate. Meanwhile the non-rogue group was waiting back at the original intersection, so I headed back. After a few phone calls I decided to have us all follow the ad hoc routing of the breakaway bunch.
Back together we skirted the Cambridge Reservoir to Trapelo Road and its short but steep(ish) hill. After a final climb up Spring Street over Route 2, we passed through some posh streets in Lexington on the way back to the Bike Path and home.
Riders were (left to right in the photo): Nancy, Dan, Ruth, Diana, Ellen, Tom, Laurie, Allen, Barbara, Marianne, and Joy.
Thank you Joy for sweeping.
