For my R-12, June ride, opted to stay in the valley and do #93 Bartlett Lake Bwd2. This was a backward, version of #93perm, modified to start at my usual spot. It was just me doing the ride. Some thought about the route. Pima around Happy Valley was under construction, as was Happy Valley going W from Reata Pass. So this new route was to avoid that. I was also hoping with the backward route to get to the climbing a bit earlier to beat the heat. Starting at 430 am I was done with the climb out of Bartlett at 11am. Not too bad.
Starting off from McDs it was dark yet the dawn was there in the east. It is these times that I wish I started an hour or 2 earlier. As it was I got less than 4 hours of sleep. Great temps to start. When turn W on Deer Valley the traffic was a bit heavier than I expected, yet not bad.
How fun to ride this part the opposite way! Ite seemed brand new to me especially around the lakes at mile 10. Realized for the 1st time that there is a 3-story house right around mile 10.7. I don't think I ever realized this even from all the Bull Shifter rides through here, as most of those were in the going W instead of E.
Oh those May Blvd cracks might be a bit easier on the bum going E. Now for Scottsdale Rd. No bike lane and narrow shoulder so maybe next time turn off Scottsdale onto Grayhawk east to 74th St north and head over to Hayden. Although if Happy Valley is finished and depending on if they put a bike lane on it, could use Happy Valley up to Reata Pass, as on original route.
Had a gatorade at top of 9-mile. Then back W on Dynamite! Great view. Rest of way down to Bartlett was the same. There was a bit more traffic heading to the lake than I remember on other rides. Maybe bc I was later this time?
At the Bartlett store as I rode up sat an elderly lady at the table in a blue Lake Bartlett shirt. I wondered if she might be the owner! Inside, the were out of the big bottles of V8 so bought 2 little cans and 2 almond joy candy bars. While waiting to pay behind 2 customers I noticed the big photo on the wall of a husband/wife and son: that built the marina and there she was Sarah! So when I walked outside I struck up a conversation with her. Short one as her son drove up in big pick-up. That stop was 15 minutes with most of it waiting in line to pay inside the store! Yikes. Usually just turn around and head up the hill.
Up the climb I went. I did sweat a bit and when the breeze was from the front it was still cool. Made it up, little traffic. Done with climb out by 11am. Great! Finished up with Sears-Kay and then headed down to Carefree / Cave Creek.
Started thinking about ice cream so DQ in Cave Creek popped into my head. So stopped in and had a double cheese burger with fries, peanut butter cup blizzard, and cups of water! Took a bit for the burger to arrive but yummy! That was a great meal but it took 36 minutes! Wondered if I should take any electrolytes, but I did not.
Now for the new part of the route. The trip south on Cave Creek Rd was a bit into the wind so slower than usual. Finally to Deer Valley Rd where I rode it W until it ended! On to unexplored roads! For most of these roads in this section, if I had ridden them before it was 1x as they all seemed new to me. Lots of turns and stuff, but it made that cross-town much better than the usual straigh shot. So many golf-courses, some shade, a couple longer lights.
Mile 121 had to make a water stop into Arby's! Getting hot, but no cramping! Turns-out I did not cramp when I got home either and no cramps through the night, as I had had the previous ride. Maybe that DQ meal was worth it!
I would take this route again! Even though my overall time was slower than last time, by about 25 riding minutes.
Oh - footnote - I wore my old Castelli shorts and they again chaffed my bum right above the seat line. These old Castelli shorts will NOT be part of my 1200 k wardrobe. Need to find 3-4 pair that will be!
Just think, Day 1 of CO Front Range 1200km in a couple weeks, will be twice as long as today and more than double the climbing! Ouch!
