Ever been across Stoke common? It avoids the nasty left hand turn into Stoke Common Rd if you are heading for Burnham Beeches. It was unchartered territory for your leader but fortunately we had a local guide amongst our party. The first 100m are a bit single track but after that it's a solid bridleway across open heathland. Skylarks, kestrel and sparrow hawks frequent this area but we only spotted children's TV presenter Johnny Ball walking his dog. Beggars can't be choosers etc. Coffee was at the aforementioned Beeches. We then dropped down into Cookham and took a short detour a long the river before crossing the Fleet Bridge. Built in 1929, it was a gift to the village by Mrs Balfour Allen as a memorial to her husband Edward. Together with the causeway, the bridge has proved to be invaluable in times of flood. Then on to Flat Harry's for lunch. Service a bit slow but we weren't in too much of a hurry. After lunch we rattled our way down sustrans route 50 to the outskirts of Maidenhead and then took a direct and devious route through Slough and onward to Uxbridge.
