Had perfect weather for a long gravel ride. Sunny skies. Stiff northwest wind around 10mph, but it shifted a bit right at the very end to a NE wind and died off a bit.
Gravel was pretty well packed in Meriwether which performs almost no maintenance on their roads and the roads themselves don't have much gravel. Hard packed clay with a lot of holes and ruts, fast riding when dry. Pike county always overdoes the maintenance and it's been a bit too dry lately for the limited traffic to really push in the excessive amount of gravel they lay down. Also much of the gravel route through Pike is open and unshaded so the small amount of rain the past two weeks has been sundried which resulted in dry and dusty conditions.
I had a group of three teenage hooligans on ATVs come by me three times in Pike just to antagonize me with dust. Childish, annoying, and sad. One can only hope they'll do something dumb enough to take themselves out of the gene pool and win a Darwin award. People like that make me ashamed that I was born in Georgia.
Did good rationing of my water till Red oak creek at the covered bridge where I filtered 2.5 bottles, and I did pretty well digesting my food till around the 100 mile mark when I began to feel the effects of indigestion. This hampered my pace and by the time I stopped in Williamson for faucet water at a park, I really didn't want to eat any of the remaining shot bloks I had. As I really dislike stopping at a store even more, I pushed on and was able to keep a decent pace, but was definitely held back by my stomach issues.
Good ride overall. Gotta get the body ready for Kanza. I hate to call these sort of rides "training rides" because I don't like the term, but I do need to build up my endurance for these long rides so far out of the norm of my usual ride length.
