Fuel EX 9.8. Sunny and windy, warmer today, around 50 at the start and got up into the mid-60's, so it was a gorgeous day and there were lots of areas with brilliant Fall colors. Also humid early but that dropped and the gusty winds really helped dry the place out. I started around 10:00 am and as far as I know I was the only one out there except for some hikers and a Park Service guy walking the trails and examining the ravine bridges, of which there were tons - see the picture of the Trailforks map, all the red symbols are bridges of some sort. As I was finishing up my ride around 1:00 pm, some other riders were starting to trickle in.
Kinsey Park is themed after the Wizard of Oz so all the trails are appropriately named. MTB trails are maintained solely by PAMBA, the local Peoria MTB club. There are also two picnic areas for group rest stops: In the North at a trail junction is the Wizard's Palace with a bike rack picnic table and a park trail map. This one's at the junction of The Wizard, The Land of Oz, Lions and Tigers and Bears and the Farm Road connector trails; Down toward the middle of the park is the Sarah Gray Memorial Picnic Area which also has a fully stocked bike repair station, including a stand, tools and air pump. This one is located on the Farm Road at the junction of Flying Monkeys, Emerald Forest, Horse of a Different Color and Lions and Tigers and Bears trails.
The trail conditions were greatly improved over yesterday but there were still a lot of wet leaves, some greasy and wet spots in places so it was slow going for the first hour or so. As I got further up the mountain, the trail conditions were great - hard packed dry clay. Pretty accurately marked - trails were in line with the Trailforks map 98% of the time and there were good trail signs at the junctions. The Green trails were truly green but still a blast. The Blue trails were much harder and more challenging with lots of barriers, obstacles and of course tons of ravines and bridges.
A few exceptions: The Cowardly Lion was definitely the hardest trail and I'd say it leans towards being black diamond at times, particularly in the Northeast section down by the creek. The newest trail - The Wizard - was more of a green trail to me. That and the Land of Oz were my favorite trails in the park. The two warmup trails - Munchkinland East and West - were flat and fast and a great way to start off and finish up the ride. After that there is a lot of punchy climbing, several times I didn't think I'd make it up the hill. The longest climb was .6 mile long up the Scarecrow and Tin Man. The climb up Farm Hill Road is also very long and steep.
All in all a very well thought out and maintained trail system. You could easily do 25 to 30 miles by going both directions but it would be a challenging day. My average speed was pretty slow but mostly due to it being new to me and the wetter conditions. There were also a lot of obstacles I didn't feel comfortable jumping without scoping them out first, so I had a lot of starts and stops. Also be forewarned, there are no toilets or water, so bring your own supplies. Surprisingly, I only saw one deer but I did see a flock of 3 wild turkeys too.
