Backhaus | Taqueria San Bruno | Gelataio
I thought I'd have my car back for this weekend but alas they were still working on it. And since last weekend's ride, I saw this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqRS46pKbRs
In the video they talked about Taqueria San Bruno which was supposed to be really good and featured multiple years in the Michellin Guide. And we passed right by it last weekend. They also had some of my other favorites which the guys had never been to before so I suggested trying to do a food tour ride.
I didn't want to do the exact same route as last weekend. The first route had way too many steep climbs and busy roads at the end. My first good route seemed too flat. I created a couple more but in the end I settled on this one as I haven't ridden on Parrot Dr. in a while.
The start of the ride was filled with indecision about how to dress. It was warm standing in the sun but cold in the shade and we were pretty sure it would be cold when we were riding. We started with all the layers but I actually stripped them pretty early on. It was chilly in spots but never cold enough that I needed to put anything back on.
First stop was Backhaus. The guys wanted to start later since it's been cold in the mornings but I've never been to Backhaus this late before. I know they get busy. When we got there, there was a line. I had the guys go in and check to see if they wanted to wait and they did.
I'm glad they did because we all got things that were new to me and they were all good. Sonny's Everything Croissant w/Cream Cheese was a standout. My Mocha Cream Scone was pretty good too.
I guess the other issue with the route, and why I wanted to add more climbing, was Taqueria San Bruno wasn't really that far from Backhaus. Originally, I wanted to add Suzanne's Cake & Pastry (also featured in the video) because I'd never been before but we probably wouldn't have had room for lunch.
There was a line for the bathroom at Backhaus so we just left figuring we'd find another spot. I started asking the guys if they wanted to stop at all the porta potties we saw and eventually stopped at a convenient one in Hillsborough. Man we saw a lot of them today - dozens and dozens.
I enjoyed the route to Taqueria San Bruno, maybe a little more than last weekends even. There was slightly less garbage miles today.
When we got to the place, most of the tables were filled but it wasn't too bad. I don't think my burrito was that special. I think the burrito I got at Melissas Taqueria was much better.
After lunch, we got trolled by a mailman. We just got going and he was driving behind us and at the next intersection he turned but he yelled out to us, "can't you guys go faster than that?" :)
To add miles, I noticed a bike trail around Oyster Point. It turned out to be really nice and I wish there was a trail like that connected all the way down to San Mateo instead of having to do the crappy roads around SFO.
Last week I tried to convince the guys to do the trail by Bayside Park instead of Airport Blvd. which I normally don't do. Since we were going by there again, I thought, we have to do it today. Well I did it and they didn't. To be fair, I've only done it once and for some reason I remembered it being dirt. It turns out it's part of the Bay Trail and it was paved. The problem was the last section of it was closed for construction so I had to detour back onto Airport Blvd. just after the Anza long term airport parking. It's possible the section under construction was the dirt section I was remembering.
After Foster City, the guys seemed low energy. The original plan was to go down to Redwood City for gelato but we found a great place in San Carlos, Gelataio. That cut about 10 miles from the ride.
I was expecting today's ride to not be as nice as last weekend's since it felt like we were doing more urban, neighborhood riding but I thought it was great. I also didn't know about the red flag warning until the night before. I kept double checking the weather and it said the wind was going to be very mild, and it was. I saw a weather report showing that where we'd be riding wasn't affected by the warning so that was a bonus!
