GWNN ride - Sunday April 30 - TJE East Granville to OSU Newark branch campus.
Despite the iffy weather forecast, we had a pretty good turnout. Initially there were Kevin, Bill, Della Rick, Carol and Denny. Ralph and Tom missed the start but caught up with us on the trail. Rolling stock - 3 trikes, 3 TEs and 2 GRRs.
The ride began humid, foggy and unpromising. The Rail-Trail portion to Newark is all but abandoned, the pavement root-rough with the untrimmed foliage closing in. It’s starting to look like the west leg of this trail.
The Cherry Valley section along Raccoon Creek is rough and dissolving into gravel. By the time we crossed SR16 and headed for OSU, rising winds blew away the mugg and spirits lifted. The OSU branch campus is lovely and as usual on Sundays, abandoned.
Returning south to Campus from the Goose Pond road spur, we cranked through a 25 kph headwind with 35 kph gusts. Oy!
On the return to Granville, we explored two new spurs. The first new spur is along the new Thornwood Crossing - SR16/CherryValley interchange. It crosses over SR16 and ends at Newark Granville road. The second new spur has a very expensive bridge over Raccoon Creek to Raccoon Valley Park soccer fields. Not sure why.
Post ride chow in Granville was a new adventure. The Brew Dog Pub is now a Donato’s Pizza joint with limited beer. Mo’s BarBQ was all smoked meats and a few IPAs. The old Broadway Pub is now twice the size but packed - 30 minute wait. Della led us to a Mexican restaurant with good food and good beer.
All-in-all another great ride w/ good friends, good bikes and good weather. The trail itself left a lot to be desired. I believe that we shall downgrade this trail to match its western segment - the Johnstown run.
