Seven devotees of early 19th century romantic poetry masquerading as Loiterers set off to scale Harrow hill and pay homage to Lord Byron at the place that gave him so much inspiration. By lunchtime the number had grown to nine. But I am ahead of myself. To tackle the ascent you need to establish a base camp to refuel before the final push. Morrisons, the usually favoured site, was shut so refreshment was taken at Sid's Cafe and Pizzeria in West Harrow Park. I told him that the gas companies were going to be privatised but the look he gave me suggested he already knew. By fair means of foul we all all made it to the Peachy stone where the view was far from inspirational so no further poems were added to the cannon. Hat tip to Margaret who found the small memorial to Byron's illegitimate daughter Allegra . We also admired the mosaics on the family tomb of the Leighton family which is nearby. We descended the hill via the school's playing fields and wriggled our way to the Black Horse for lunch.
