A ride on the NH Ice Cream Trail to Morano Gelato in Hanover, and Ice Cream Fore-U in West Lebanon, NH. Ride starts and ends at Hannaford's supermarket lot West Lebanon. Head out of the lot across the road to the Powerhouse Mall where Eastern Mountain Sports and L. L. Bean might help with gear issues. A short ride away a bridge over the Connecticut River brings you into VT, with a mountain bike shop again for your last minute needs. Here is a long hill, about 1/4 the way up I thought I'd stop and run an experiment. I locked my front suspension thingy. In theory this would eliminate the slight compression of the thing on every stroke, and put more power into moving up the hill. Can't tell If I made it up any faster that way, having nothing to compare it to. But I can say it "Felt Better". So much better that I forgot I'd done that till some time later when I was wondering why by hands and arms were taking a beating on a rough patch of road. Anyway, down the road find the Electric Avenue and Power Dam. Good views of the river at Kilowatt North Wilder Picnic Area. After the picnic area find a paved Bike Path on the west side of Rt 5 that takes you under Rt 91 and back onto Rt 5. Next up is the best find of the ride. King Arthur Flour bakery cafe. Delicious. Nice campus. First place with a bike rack on any of these rides. Around the bend find the Montshire Museum of Science. Looks like a good visit. Back into NH over a ballsy bridge. Apparently this ride follows some of the Upper Valley Trails loop, but not this part, turn left into the campus of Dartmouth College. Thayer School of Engineering celebrating 150 years! When you're a leading school you can do things your way, and have speed DIPS instead of BUMPS. Riding into downtown Hanover finds the Morano Gelato stop, and a busy reunion weekend in June. On back towards W. Lebanon on 12A finds the other side of the Dam, and Peace. Next stop Ice Cream Fore-U in the parking lot of Home Depot. Riding into W. Lebanon and under Rt 89 brings you into the finest example of suburban sprawl anywhere on the plant. Be CAREFUL of the drivers, they know not what you are. Returning from the Fore-U escape behind Walmart onto a light industrial park road and then up to the Airport. Why ride up that hill? So you can then ride down it! And so you can see the Woodstock Soapstone Stoves place. Finest USA made woodstoves on the planet IMO. Too bad the showroom wasn't open, plan your visit better and you can talk woodstoves with the best. Also see the Airport, and some fine views on the speedy trip back down. One final view of the Mascoma River, and back to the parking lot, where I found the second penny of the rides!
