A Ride on the NH Ice Cream trail to Ava Marie Handmade Chocolates, Peterborough, NH. Ride begins and ends in Shaws supermarket parking lot. Take Elm street up to the MacDowell Colony artists residences. Continue on to Peterborough Players playhouse. Maybe you'll notice the site of the one room schoolhouse, maybe not. View the mountains along the way, crossing Rt202. Cavender road is Not A Thru Way. It leads to an unpaved Trail. Road bike riders may want to return to Peterborough on Rt 202 at least up to EMS, where they can rejoin the paved trail from there. The unpaved Trail off Cavender Road has rocks, roots, sticks, branches, mud, standing water, etc. but it's fine on a hybrid or mountain bike. There is a Tunnel. A bit after the Tunnel, there is a circle and a road that leads to the headquarters of Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS), who at one time ruled the mountain gear universe in this area of the country. Alas, now they have to assure friends they are in fact open. Rejoining the trail at the circle it is now paved into Peterborough., where there is a small Fire Engine museum, next to some big fire engines. Cross the main drag into the shopping area to find the Peterborough Diner, Toadstool's Books, and many other shopping and dining places. Ava Marie's is just around the corner past a small park. It's not just Ice Cream you know. UP Vale street and down to Rt 101 to cross it onto Old Dublin Road. A fine ride to cross Rt 101 again, and head up to the lake behind the flood control dam at Edward MacDowell Lake. Some sort of Ancient piece of equipment whose purpose is mystifying was bolted to wall at the Lake Headquarters building. Onward anyway, to Nabanusit Co-housing. All cars park at sheds in the entrance to the property, walking only on the grounds. A interesting concept perhaps, though I didn't stop to chat with anyone about it...
